How does access to gender-affirming care impact mental health for transgender and gender-diverse youth?

A recent study in Psychiatry Research found that transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth face higher mental health challenges, often shaped by stigma, delayed access to care, and developmental experiences.

Key insights:
• Non-binary youth reported higher rates of mental health challenges
• Seeking care later (at older ages or later puberty stages) was linked to worse mental health outcomes
• Delayed recognition or support of gender identity was associated with increased depression and anxiety
• Socioeconomic factors also influenced access to care

The takeaway:
Early, supportive, and accessible gender-affirming care can play a critical role in improving mental health outcomes for TGD youth.

The Florida Department of Health has issued an Emergency Rule to implement recent changes to the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). These changes will take effect March 1 and may impact how clients access HIV medications and support services.

For clients, this could affect how medications are accessed, continuity of care, or enrollment in coverage programs. For providers and community partners, now is the time to review updated guidance, prepare staff, and proactively support clients who may be impacted.

If you have questions, contact your local health department or case manager for updated information.

A recent study found that many people starting PrEP aren’t receiving all the recommended HIV and STI testing at the beginning of care or during follow-up visits. The issue isn’t just individual providers, it points to bigger system and workflow challenges in how care is delivered.

Why this matters:
- Regular testing helps catch HIV or STIs early
- Strong clinic workflows support better prevention outcomes
- Small system changes (like lab bundles or EHR reminders) can make a big difference

This research reminds us that effective HIV prevention depends on both access and quality of care.
