BRIGID KOSGEI

As a little girl, Brigid walked six miles to school every day.
Sometimes she would jog to avoid being late. Along the way, she would see athletes running gracefully in single file, training for races and marathons. She wanted to be just like them.
Brigid always took part in running events at school. Unfortunately, in her third year of high school, Brigid's mother could no longer afford to pay her school fees. She had to drop out of school at 17 years old.
Suddenly, Brigid found she had a lot of time to dedicate to running.

The budding athlete started training seriously with her boyfriend who soon became her husband. After the pair got married, Brigid gave birth to twins and took a break from her athletic career.
A year later, she returned to her training, more motivated than ever.

Brigid's specialty was running long distances, like marathons, which
are 26.2 miles long! To succeed, Brigid had to be physically fit and mentally focused. She would remind herself, "Sometimes you have to be more patient than others, and sometimes you may not feel like running, but in the end, it will pay off." And it sure did.
In Portugal in 2015, Brigid ran her very first marathon. And she won first place! In 2019, at 25 years old, Brigid became the youngest woman ever to win the London Marathon. That same year, she won the Chicago Marathon, breaking the world record by 81 seconds!
Brigid is the fastest female marathon runner in the world.

BEVERLY LORAINE GREENE

Beverly was an only child. She often had to keep herself busy while her father went to work at a law firm and her mother managed the house. Beverly's favorite thing to do was draw. With lines and curves and color, she could make pictures come to life.
After high school, she studied architecture. But university life was not easy for Beverly. She stood out in her classes. When she graduated, she was the first Black woman at her university to get a degree in architectural engineering. And when she registered as an architect with the state of Illinois in 1942, she became the first licensed Black woman architect in the United States. She could now draw and design all the buildings she wanted! Or so she thought.
Despite all her achievements, Beverly could not find a job in her hometown. No one in Chicago would hire a Black female architect.

So she packed her bags and moved to New York City. She applied for a job with a company building a housing project. The company did not want Black people living in their houses, and Beverly thought they'd never hire a Black architect. But she applied for the job anyway. To her great surprise, she got the job. Her career had begun!

Beverly worked on the designs for an arts complex, a university theater, a United Nations headquarters in Paris, and even the funeral home where her memorial service was held.
The little girl who loved to draw grew up to design beautiful buildings
and break barriers for Black women.

Happy Womens History Month

Barbara was always a curious kid. Lucky for her, that curiosity never went away. After 55 years as a full-time nurse and part- time taxi driver, she was ready for a new adventure.

She wanted to visit all the places she'd never had the time or money to see before. Did she start out with a quiet trip to a sunny beach? Not Barbara! She booked herself a trip to Canada in the middle of winter.

There, she photographed humongous polar bears and learned how to dogsled across frozen fields. Loving the snowy landscape, she decided to become the first Black woman to reach the North Pole.
To prepare, Barbara collected fleece clothes, took lots of vitamins, ran miles on the treadmill, and pumped iron at the gym. She took skiing lessons and raised money for supplies. Then she hired guides to help her across the ever-shifting ice floes.

Barbara took two bumpy helicopter rides to get close to the North Pole. The gear she carried was heavy, and the journey was longer and colder than any she'd made before. And because of a cancer surgery she'd had a few years before, her lungs weren't the best. But she didn't let that stop her. Seventy-five-year-old Barbara skied the rest of the way.
When she reached the North Pole, she jumped up and down and screamed into the frosty air. She'd made it to the top of the world!

And she wasn't done yet. Right before her 80th birthday, Barbara trekked to the South Pole. Her adventurous spirit took her all over the world, and she loved every minute of it!

When Adriana was a kid, her great-grandmother gave her a piece of advice: "Sell today. Eat tomorrow." At the marketplace in São Paulo, Brazil, Adriana saw exactly what she meant.
She watched women sitting at small, colorful stands selling food. If they didn't sell, their families' bellies would be empty.
Adriana started her first job at 15 to help out her family. But at 25, she found herself unemployed and out of money. So she set up a thrift store on the side of the road. Sitting there in the hot sun, she made friends with a fellow vendor who sold pastries. Together, they dreamed up a fantastic idea and decided to bring it to life. They would launch a market to promote Black businesses.
The first Feira Preta, or "Black Market," opened in 2002 with 40 vendors.

They sold a little bit of everything: hair oils, headwraps, natural beauty products, patterned fabrics, crafts, toys, shoes, and more. Five thousand visitors came in a single weekend!
More people and more vendors crammed into the market each year until Adriana had to find a bigger venue. Feira Preta grew into a 20-day celebration of Black art, culture, and science, with speeches and even political debates. Twenty years later, the fair is still going strong.

Adriana started a training program for Black business owners, hosted events to bring entrepreneurs together, and set up a platform so Feira Preta vendors could sell online. With creativity and vision, she supports Black business owners and helps their companies thrive.

ALEXA CANADY PEDIATRIC NEUROSURGEON

Once upon a time, there was a girl who was really smart. But nobody knew it, because her test scores were just okay.

Alexa's family did a little digging to find out why she didn't test well at school. They found out that Alexa's elementary school teacher had been switching her grades with a white student's. The wicked teacher got fired, and Alexa skipped third grade and went straight to fourth.
In college, Alexa started out in the math department, but something was missing. Next, she got a degree in zoology, the study of animals.
But that wasn't a perfect fit either. Finally, she found medicine, and it was just right! Alexa realized she wanted to heal people.

After years and years of training, she became the first Black woman to be a pediatric neurosurgeon—a doctor who treats children's brains.
Alexa loved her job. Sometimes she'd work as many as 100 hours in a week, playing games with patients, diagnosing them, and battling their illnesses. She healed thousands of children. Some kids were in her care for so long that she became part of their family. Her patients trusted her and told her about their symptoms. Sometimes even the littlest bits of information could make a big difference in saving a kid's life.

Once, a little boy came to her showing signs of a stroke. Alexa didn't believe it. He was so young! How could he have a disease that usually only affected adults? Something didn't feel right to Alexa.
After many tests, she found a tiny tumor. She removed it and saved the boy's life. "Always trust your gut," Alexa says.
