The Red Door Kitchen (RDK) was created on February 20,1984 by Father Jack Lawrence of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, members of his congregation and members of other local churches. Our mission: To enhance the quality of life of persons who are homebound by providing nutritious meals and related services
The Red Door Kitchen provides nutritious meals to and touches the lives of more than 100 people each weekday. Some of these people come to our facility, but most have a meal delivered to them. We provide more than 36,000 meals each year and those meals are served and delivered by unpaid volunteers from area churches and the local community who donate their time, vehicles and expenses. For many of our patrons who are homebound, our delivery driver might be the only person they interact with all day and just that human contact is as critical as a meal. We have partnered with First Family Services to ensure those we serve are truly deserving and that we make the best use of our resources. The only requirement to receive a meal is that someone is not able to prepare or secure a noon meal. This might be due to financial issues, but could also be due to someone recovering from an illness and needing some short term assistance. We are fortunate to have a strong United Way program here, which provides some assistance to The Red Door Kitchen. We also work closely with the City of Talladega and with our local Wal-Mart, which donates end of cycle food items. As a food pantry program, we are also eligible to participate in the Alabama Food Bank and we qualify for FEMA funding as well. But our real support comes from our community. Churches, schools, civic groups, businesses and individuals are the backbone of our funding. We are particularly grateful for two community events, Humor on the Square and Afternoon of Praise, which raise funds for RDK annually. Thank you, to those who directly support us through your donations to and attendance at these events! How You Can Help:
It is the goal of the Board of Directors to improve and expand the services of The Red Door Kitchen to meet the needs of this area. We would like to be able to prepare meals using controlled food sources so that menus can be prepared and followed. In order to meet our goals, RDK needs volunteers to serve on the board or on committees, assist in the kitchen, and serve as dependable and caring route drivers. We also need regular financial support. Route drivers usually deliver meals one day per week, but we will accept your help in whatever way fits your schedule. We always need a good list of substitute drivers as well. The need for a nutritious noon meal is critical to the well-being of many Talladega residents, but perhaps even more important is the need to know that someone cares about you as an individual. The Red Door Kitchen is not just about meeting a need, but also about loving and caring for people.
