Talkeetna Historical Society

Talkeetna Historical Society Nonprofit and Museum, dedicated to preserving the history of the Upper Susitna Valley. There is a gap in the late 70s.

The origins of the Historical Society read like a number of Talkeetna organizations. The society was formed in 1972 by a small group of Talkeetna residents headed by Minnie Swanda and Pete Dana. They worked on making the old one room schoolhouse a museum, which opened in 1974. There are very few documents to show how many meetings were held or what was official in those days. The society official

ly signed incorporation documents in 1985. Some of the same residents that started the organization were on that Board of Directors. Since that time, however, the society took off and at times had as many as 250 or 300 members from around the world. In 1989, we became an official 501 c 3 nonprofit, tax deductible organization. Today, the organization handles several historic properties and buildings and continues to promote and educate individuals and visitors from all over the world about Talkeetna's rich heritage: natives, mining, mountaineering, the Alaska Railroad and much more.

Not only is the event of historical interest, it’s a fundraiser for the Denali Mountain Rescue team! Sheldon Arts Hangar, TONIGHT, 7:00.

50 years ago, local resident Roger Robinson, along with four others, reached the summit of Mt Huntington, which sits near the southeastern base of Denali. They made the second ascent of the NW Ridge, better known as the French Ridge, named after the legendary climber Lionel Terray, who led a French team on the mountain's first ascent in 1964. Cindy Jones, a member of Robinson’s team and the first woman to summit the mountain, will give the presentation of their 1976 climb. The program will begin with a short historic film of the 1964 French climb. The evening will end with a slide presentation by local residents Brian McCullough and Lance Leslie on their alpine-style ascent of the French Ridge and epic descent of the East Ridge and North Face in 1981. This remarkable climb was the third ascent of the ridge and the first traverse of the mountain.

Denali rescue volunteers have been assisting the Park and climbing rangers for nearly 50 years. These volunteers donate their time, skills, and expertise to protect Denali’s mountaineering visitors and preserve its glaciated wilderness. Climbers and Denali National Park are indebted to them for their service.

Many thanks to the students of Su Valley High School for helping us with our fundraiser this year! Mr. Lanning’s class put their shop skills to work cutting out the wooden fish templates for this year’s art auction entries.

The templates are now available at the museum, so stop by and pick yours up whenever you have a chance. The Museum is open daily from 9:00 to 5:00. We can’t wait to see what amazing art everyone creates for this year’s auction!

The auction is being held on August 15th, so you have plenty of time … but don’t wait or they’ll sell out!

In memoriam: On this day in 2013, Alaska State Trooper Tage Toll and AST Pilot Mel Nading were performing a search and rescue of an injured snowmachiner in a remote area just east of Talkeetna. After locating the snowmachiner, they were headed back to Talkeetna when Helo-1 crashed. Trooper Toll, Pilot Nading and the snowmachiner all perished.
