Susitna River Coalition

Susitna River Coalition A voice & resource for the people of the Susitna Valley supporting a healthy Susitna Watershed. McKinley wilderness. This dam must be stopped.

The state of Alaska has announced plans to construct a massive dam on the Susitna River, in the heart of the South Denali/Mt. If built, the 5 or 7 billion dollar dam would be one of the tallest on earth. The potential negative effects of this dam are huge. The Susitna River has one of the largest king salmon runs in Alaska, which the dam would seriously jeopardize, and the construction would destr

oy prime habitat of moose, caribou, and bear. Since 1979, there have been no less than 11 catastrophic dam failures in America; and the Susitna Dam site is only 40 miles from a major fault which in 2002 recorded an earthquake at 7.9 on the Richter scale. And whereas the Grand Coulee dam annually generates 2500-3000 megawatts of electricity, the Susitna dam would generate only 280-300. This past Saturday, 26 volunteers joined Susitna River Coalition and our partners at Caswell Lakes to help restore habitat at the outlet of Caswell Lake into Caswell Creek.

Together, participants planted approximately 750 native willow cuttings to stabilize streambanks, improve riparian habitat, and help protect a recent fish passage improvement project. Along the way, volunteers learned about fish passage and the important role streamside vegetation plays in supporting healthy aquatic ecosystems.

One of the highlights of the day was observing fish actively using the habitat, including longnose suckers and juvenile lamprey. This was such an exciting reminder of why restoration work matters.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy, and to our partners at the Mat-Su Salmon Habitat Partnership, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Mat-Su Borough for making the project possible.

There’s still time to join us tomorrow, Saturday June 6 from 10am to 1Pm at Caswell Lakes for a community planting day

We’ll be planting native trees and shrubs along the shoreline to help improve habitat for salmon and wildlife while learning a little about the important role healthy streamside vegetation plays in our watershed.

Whether you’re a longtime volunteer or just looking for an excuse to spend a few hours outside, we’d love to have you join us. We’ll provide the plants, tools, light breakfast items, lunch, and good company—just bring weather-appropriate clothing and a willingness to get your hands dirty.

This is a family-friendly event, and no prior experience is necessary.

We hope to see you there!

Today, the Trump Administration announced an $89 million federal grant to support continued study of the proposed Terra Energy Center coal-fired power plant in the Susitna River watershed.

As SRC Executive Director Melis Coady noted:
"What we are seeing is a familiar pattern: private interests seeking public subsidies while Alaskans are left carrying the risk. Before more public money or public land is committed, Alaskans deserve clear answers about ownership, costs, infrastructure needs, and who actually benefits."

SRC will continue to follow developments related to the project and advocate for transparency, sound science, and informed public participation in decisions affecting the Susitna watershed.

The grant would help support an assessment of the viability of a large new coal-fired power plant.

Plants for Salmon returns Saturday, June 6 at Caswell Lake.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will help plant native trees and shrubs to support salmon habitat and restore streambank conditions along the lake.

This is hands-on restoration work focused on improving habitat, stabilizing soils, and helping keep waterways healthy for future salmon runs.

Participants are encouraged to bring gloves and sturdy shoes. More informatio: https://www.susitnarivercoalition.org/plantsforsalmon or https://www.facebook.com/events/1025788509774358
