TPSS Community Kitchen

TPSS Community Kitchen Making Takoma Park and the world tastier every day! To date, 72 people have completed the 10-week series of free, bilingual business training workshops.

Most small-scale food business entrepreneurs lack the capital to invest in their own production facilities, and rental costs at the handful of available commercial kitchen establishments in the DC area are prohibitive — especially for low-income producers. So Crossroads Community Food Network and the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church developed the shared-use Takoma Park Silver Spring Community Kitch

en to help meet the needs of small-scale food entrepreneurs. The 1,120 square-foot kitchen and storage facility meets all local health and safety requirements governing food produced for sale to the public, and provides much needed food preparation space to those who have completed or are enrolled in Crossroads’ Microenterprise Training Program. The kitchen will also serve the community in food recovery efforts and by offering cooking and nutrition classes. Are you an aspiring food entrepreneur? The current session of the Microenterprise Training Program training is full, but if you’re interested in participating in a future session, please send an email to [email protected].

"For 18 years, Cheryl Sloan has been selling maple-frosted walnuts, pecans and cashews, as well as trail mix, as part of her business Cheryl’s Kitchen. Until a few years ago, she had to drive more than 30 miles to Gaithersburg to make her products, but for the last few years, she has used the Takoma Park Silver Spring Community Kitchen inside the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church on Tulip Avenue as her space. The community kitchen was started in 2017 by the nonprofit Crossroads Community Food Network as an affordable food preparation space for entrepreneurs who have gone through the organization’s microenterprise training program."

One mile is so much better than 30! We're so glad to have you at the TPSS Community Kitchen, Ms. Cheryl!

"Feed the Fridge has been unique in creating an ecosystem that addresses needs for nutritious and complete meals," says Ivie Baker, Crossroads' Community Kitchen Program Manager. "Providing accessible refrigeration, partnering with local food companies, and pairing funding for this initiative really brings a good meal to life. When someone opens the Fridge to grab lunch or a few dinners without any concern, it's equivalent to opening your fridge at home and seeing you still have some of your favorite leftovers. That is simply satisfying!"

It's official: Feed the Fridge's Mary's Center fridge, their 29th in the DMV, is now open and filled with nourishing meals from Jalapeno Mexican Grill. Making fresh, nutritious food more accessible to those in need and helping small food businesses thrive--win-win! We're grateful to Feed the Fridge founder Mark Bucher, pictured here with Jalapeño's Ciro and Araceli, Anna Hargrave of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, the Montgomery County MD Council and Mary's Center for working together to make this happen.
