Earthquake Urgency Preparedness List
Before an Earthquake:
1. Create an Emergency Plan:
• Identify safe places in each room (under sturdy furniture, against an interior wall away from windows).
• Establish a meeting point with family members.
• Know the emergency evacuation routes and the location of the nearest shelter.
2. Assemble an Emergency Kit:
• Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days)
• Non-perishable food (at least a three-day supply)
• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust masks, to help filter contaminated air
• Plastic sheeting and duct tape (for sheltering in place)
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Manual can opener for food
• Local maps
• Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
3. Secure Your Home:
• Fasten shelves, mirrors, and large furniture to walls.
• Store heavy and breakable items on low shelves.
• Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity.
4. Learn First Aid:
• Take a basic first aid and CPR class.
During an Earthquake:
1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On:
• Drop to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over.
• Cover your head and neck under a sturdy piece of furniture.
• Hold on to the furniture until the shaking stops.
2. Stay Indoors:
• If inside, stay there. Do not run outside.
• If in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow.
• If in a wheelchair, lock the wheels and cover your head and neck.
3. If Outdoors:
• Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires.
• Drop to the ground and cover your head and neck.
4. If in a Vehicle:
• Pull over to a clear location and stop. Avoid bridges, overpasses, and power lines.
• Stay inside the vehicle until the shaking stops.
After an Earthquake:
1. Check for Injuries and Damage:
• Provide first aid to those injured.
• Avoid using the phone unless it’s an emergency.
2. Inspect Utilities:
• Check for gas leaks, damaged electrical lines, and water leaks.
• If you smell gas, turn off the gas valve and open windows.
3. Stay Informed:
• Listen to a battery-operated radio for emergency information and instructions.
4. Be Prepared for Aftershocks:
• These can follow the main earthquake and cause additional damage.
5. Stay Away from Damaged Areas:
• Unless you are qualified to provide assistance, avoid disaster areas.
6. Document Damage for Insurance Claims:
• Take photos of any damage to your property.
