Today, we remember celebrated author and Cherokee Nation citizen Wilson Rawls (pictured right) on his birthday. Born September 24, 1913, in Scraper, Oklahoma, Rawls spent much of his childhood in Cherokee County, along the Illinois River on his mother’s allotment. On trips to Tahlequah, young Wilson searched the Carnegie Library’s shelves for adventure stories, with Jack London’s “The Call of the Wild” among his favorites.

His childhood later inspired him to write the youth novels “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Summer of the Monkeys.” First published in 1961, “Where the Red Fern Grows” has sold millions of copies, carrying the landscapes of Rawls’ Cherokee Nation childhood to generations of readers worldwide.
