Free Rides to Cooling Centers on Pierce Transit
June 13 through 16

The Puget Sound area is forecast to experience high temperatures from Saturday, June 13 through Tuesday, June 16. To help those who need transportation to get out of the heat and shelter during hot weather, Pierce Transit is partnering with Pierce County Human Services to provide free rides on bus, Runner and SHUTTLE paratransit (for registered SHUTTLE customers) to local cooling centers and shelters.

The free rides to cooling centers and shelters will be in effect on Pierce Transit services from start of service Saturday, June 13 through close of service Tuesday, June 16. The free round trips are available throughout the day and evening on those dates for passengers who tell the driver they are traveling to or from a cooling center or shelter. Shelters are open in many Pierce County locations including Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Parkland and Gig Harbor.

Fireworks Show Notice (and reminder from Humane Society)

With the FIFA World Cup 26 coming to the Puget Sound region this summer, there will be an opening celebration on June 12th to kick things off.

As part of the festivities, a fireworks show is scheduled for 10:15 PM on Friday, June 12th, at 3001 Puyalupabsh St. Tacoma WA, 98404.

While this is an exciting moment for our community, we want to share an important reminder: pets can easily be scared by the loud booms and bangs caused by fireworks. A startled pet may bolt, dig under fences, or slip out of a leash, and these incidents are one of the top causes of pets becoming lost.

Here are a few tips to help your furry family members stay safe:

Create a Safe and Comfortable Space

Keep pets inside and secure while fireworks are going off by ensuring doors, gates, and windows are closed at all times. Be especially mindful of open doors and gates during gatherings or when welcoming guests to prevent your pet from slipping out unnoticed.

Walk Your Dog Earlier in the Day

Whenever possible, exercise your pet well ahead of nightfall and plan to keep them indoors all evening to avoid the prime time for fireworks.

Minimize the Noise

Close windows and curtains to help dampen the noise. You can also use fans, television, radio, or a white noise machine to block out the booms.

Check out some additional tips for keeping pets safe during fireworks in our Pet Care Tips for the Fourth of July blog post using the button below!

Let's enjoy the celebration and make sure our four-legged neighbors are safe and sound through the night!

The Fourth of July brings cookouts, summer fun, and fireworks – but it also leads to an increase in lost pets across the United States. The loud booms and bangs can easily scare pets, causing them to bolt. Let’s make sure we keep our beloved pets safe at home with these tips.
