Background: A number of residents, near the previous and (now again) proposed site, have expressed concern that the City has not followed-through on the promise of locating such operations equally around the city -- there were many issues at the South Tacoma site, before, which went unaddressed... returning it South Tacoma (instead of a different / new site) will be adding more safety, security and environmental concerns will be added on top of the previously unresolved issues.

OFFICIAL NOTICE:
The City of Tacoma’s Neighborhood and Community Services and Public Works are preparing to move Tacoma Emergency Micro-Shelter (TEMS) 3 to 3860 South 69th Street (in the vicinity of S. 69th St. and Proctor Ave) by November 16th, 2026, from its current location at 602 North Orchard Ave where it has successfully operated since December 2021. The relocation is due to the property's scheduled sale in early January 2027 for the future development of a cancer center.

The current operator for the site is Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), who has been operating this program since December 2020. The site features 40 micro-shelter units serving approximately 60 individuals at a time, which primarily focuses on families, with 24/7 on-site staff supervision and case management. Residents have access to hygiene amenities, including shower facilities, handwashing stations, restrooms, laundry services, and food. The screening process will be led by LIHI and will receive referrals from local homeless service providers and from the City of Tacoma Homeless Engagement Alternative Liaison (HEAL) outreach team.

Onsite preparation is scheduled to begin the first week of October. This work involves installing essential electrical infrastructure for the micro-shelters, kitchen, and hygiene units, alongside developing onsite parking space. Additionally, the City is planning to send out flyers to the surrounding neighbors and businesses (1/2 block radius) to invite them for a community meeting at the STAR Center. The community meeting will take place on Thursday, October 29th from 6:00 to 7:00pm.

Connecting South Tacoma Way is focused on improving safety and accessibility for people walking, biking, rolling, driving and accessing transit along and near South Tacoma Way. The project is looking at the corridor from S Pine Street to S 60th Street, including the S Washington Street and S Puget Sound Avenue diversions.

The project survey is now open! Share your priorities for South Tacoma Way and help shape the improvements that move forward.
