Before the Spanish burned the manuscripts, Filipinos had their own writing system.
Baybayin was spoken and written across Luzon and the Visayas for centuries before 1565. It was used for commerce, poetry, and correspondence. Colonization did not erase it completely — it drove it underground.
Today, Filipinos in Stockton, California are teaching it to their children. The script is coming home.

FLY THE FLAG WITH PRIDE! 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

Every element of the Philippine flag tells a story of the nation’s history, ideals, and struggle for freedom. From the three stars representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, to the golden sun and its eight rays honoring the first provinces that rose against colonial rule, the flag stands as a powerful symbol of Filipino identity, unity, and patriotism. The colors of the flag likewise reflect the values cherished by the Filipino people: peace, truth, justice, courage, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

As we commemorate National Flag Days and continue the celebration of the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, may we take pride in the meaning behind our national symbols and the sacrifices they represent.

The Flag Days kick off the celebration of the 128th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, with the theme “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan” (“Freedom, Future, History”).

Did you know UW’s first graduate was a woman?

This International Women’s Day, we’re honoring Clara McCarty, the first graduate of the University of Washington in 1876 — and a true trailblazer in Washington state history.

A woman of many firsts, Clara went on to become the first Pierce County woman elected to public office as Superintendent of Schools and was even the first person in the county to own a typewriter. From teacher to librarian to community leader, she helped shape education in the early Pacific Northwest.

You might recognize her name from McCarty Hall — a lasting tribute to a Husky pioneer whose legacy still lives on across campus.

Here’s to the women who paved the way.
