📍 Mason Middle School — Cuts Tracker
Across Tacoma Public Schools, staffing cuts are accelerating. Vital student supports are being eliminated or reduced for the 2025-26 school year.
At least 2 key student support positions are being eliminated or displaced at Mason Middle School this spring:
➤ 1 Instructional Coach displaced (lost to another site)
➤ 1 Librarian displaced (Library program reduced to 0.2 FTE — 1 period per day)
Right now, Mason’s full-time library program offers students:
📚 Daily lunchtime access and programs
📚 Summer offerings
📚 Battle of the Books
📚 After-school book clubs
📚 A warm, welcoming environment where students read, learn, and connect
Next year, with just 1 period per day staffed, what will be left?
At 0.2 FTE, the library can support little more than clerical or administrative tasks — not a full program. Office staff — already overworked — may be asked to provide occasional depersonalized self-checkout access.
The vibrant, student-centered library experience Mason Mustangs currently enjoy will be gutted.
Future Mason Mustangs deserve full-time, high-quality library services — literacy programs current Mustangs receive daily.
Meanwhile:
🗣️ On May 16, Supt. Josh Garcia ($386K/year) said:
👉 “We still have more work to do. There will be another round of program cuts and displacement notifications by June 13.”
🗣️ On May 22, CFO Rosaland Medina ($316K/year) said:
👉 “We’ve been making contractive cuts over the last several years. We’ve run out of the easy stuff to make reductions to.”
These cuts take effect for the 2025-26 school year. More cuts are still expected across the district.
👉 ALL STAFF: Please submit any cuts or displacements you know about — whether from your site or across the district.
