This is for teams in Washington only.

For many months a coalition of SAR organizations has been working on a bill that would be life-changing for SAR teams.

In December we will be dropping a bill with our state legislature that would allow those who purchase or renew certain state licenses to opt-in for a donation to SAR teams.

If passed, the bill sequesters the donated funds so they MUST go to SAR. No local government can divert them to their general fund. It provides a formula for distribution to counties based on population size and mission count. Some small counties have recreation sites that draw people from outside their area. They get a disproportionate number of missions so they get a few extra bucks.

Now is the time to contact your local legislator about this bill. As important as it is to US, they'll have bigger fish to fry once session starts. It's election season and legislators are reaching out to voters. THIS is our chance to get on their calendars.

SARVAC has prepared a toolkit to help you do this. It helps us deliver a simple, concise and most of all consistent message state-wide.

Update at 10.22 pm:
Melissa has been located, alive and well. West Pierce Fire & Rescue are currently performing precautionary medical assessment. We look forward to reuniting Melissa with her family very shortly. Many, many thanks to all of the first responders and volunteers who deployed in droves to search the area.

Update at 9:45 pm:
Search and rescue teams remain on scene, with search efforts underway. Inclement weather has grounded drone use, however aircraft from Pierce County Sheriff's Office are responding to assist in the search.

Update at 7:51 pm:
Search and rescue teams are responding to the area. Search by drone is also underway. Melissa was last seen wearing an unknown-colored shirt, black pants, and beige slip-on shoes. Last seen walking on foot.

Great work by our partners in King Couny!

We’re sharing this update from Seattle Mountain Rescue to highlight the incredible coordination that happens behind the scenes. From organized command posts to specialized transport, it took five different units working together to help an injured hiker this past Sunday.

A great reminder to always be prepared, stay hydrated in the heat, and never hesitate to make the call if things go wrong. Great work by all involved!

A Great Night for Pierce County SAR!

We had a fantastic turnout at last night’s Council meeting, and we were honored to host Tacoma Police Chief Patti Jackson as our guest speaker!

Chief Jackson shared her commitment to strengthening the partnership between TPD and the Search and Rescue community. It was a great opportunity to discuss how our volunteer units can better support the city and work alongside TPD's own SAR officers.

A huge thank you to Chief Jackson for her time, her personable approach, and her dedication to our community. Together, we’re making sure that "so others may live" remains a reality across the entire county.
