America’s Boating Course (ABC) will start April 24 at Day Island Yacht Club from 7 pm – 9 pm. There will be 3 in person classes and one Zoom class plus the night of the exam. Passing the exam qualifies you for Washington State Boater’s Card and discounts on insurance. All ages are encouraged to take this class.
MANDATORY BOATER EDUCATION
Recreational boaters in Washington are required by law to complete a boating safety course and carry a Washington State Boater Education Card.Whether you cruise, sail, kayak, fish, or do yoga on a stand-up paddleboard, you are responsible to know the laws and basics of boating safety. The Washington State Boater Education Card is valid for your lifetime and meets requirements for recreational boating in Canada and many other states.
DO I NEED A BOATER EDUCATION CARD?
You are required by law to carry a Boater Education Card if you fit the following criteria:
• You operate a vessel with a 15-horsepower (or greater) motor.
• You were born after Jan. 1, 1955.
• You are 12 years of age or older.

America's Boating Course, the first and basic boating course starts January 5th at Tacoma Yacht Club for 4 two hours classes on Thursdays. Passing this course qualifies you for the Washington State Boater's Card.

There are two upcoming classes being taught by America’s Boating Club of Tacoma and South Puget Sound (Tacoma Power Squadron).
Engine Maintenance starts September 22 at Tacoma Yacht Club for six weeks, 7-9pm. The instructors of this class are in the boat repair business and have taught this class many times. In this course we will cover basic practices on how to maintain your boat. By adhering to a regular maintenance schedule, you can avoid catastrophic failure, and costly mistakes. Cost for this class is $75 for members of the United States Power Squadron. $110.00 for non-members.
Piloting is another class being offered. This ten-week class will start on Monday, September 26 from 7pm to 9pm. It will be held once per week on Monday evenings. September 26, October 3, and November 21, and 28 will be at Day Island Yacht Club. The other classes will be via Zoom.
Piloting is the first of the navigational classes focusing on techniques for piloting a boat in coastal and inland conditions. The course emphasizes planning and checking along with the use of GPS for determining position, and introduces digital charting along with traditional charting, compass, and dead reckoning skills. Plotting, labeling, use of the compass, aids to navigation and a host of related topics are included in this all-new approach to coastal and inland piloting. The instructor for this class has taught this course many times and has cruised Puget Sound and to Alaska for many years.
The cost for the class is $125 for Power Squadron members and $180 for non-members, which includes books, course plotter and dividers.
