Some of you may have noticed that Guadalupe Land Trust is now called Tacoma Urban Land Trust. Why the name change? We, the board of directors of the land trust, deliberated at length over changing the name. There are many in the community who are fond of the name and we had no wish to upset anyone. But there were some problems with the name, especially as we seek to grow into a more robust organization. Here are the main reasons for the change:
1. Funders, donors and volunteers often confused us with our neighbors in the G St community, Guadalupe House and Guadalupe Vista.
2. We wanted a name that reflected the area we serve. Most urban land trusts are simply named for the city they serve. We serve urban Tacoma. The new name adds clarity.
3. It is easier to change now, while we are relatively small, than once we grow.
Ultimately, the name change was done to help us better serve our mission:
The mission of the Tacoma Urban Land Trust is
to acquire and preserve green space in Tacoma, Washington,
to combat community deterioration by promoting the development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of green space and gardens in our community neighborhoods by making land available for projects and activities that improve the quality of life in these neighborhoods,
to protect the natural environment and to promote the ecologically sound use of land and natural resources and the long-term health and safety of the community.
We hope you can come to understand our name change as part of our mission to move beyond the two properties that have been under our stewardship thus far. The current board is a vibrant collection of passionate people who want to see the organization return to it's mission of acquiring and preserving more open space in urban Tacoma.
We hope you come to associate our new name with the good work we do in our community. We invite you to join us in our mission as we build our organization. How can we better serve our community? How would you like to contribute to our mission? Are there overlaps between our goals and yours that we may exploit to support each other?
