This was how Puyallup Avenue appeared on October 20, 1938, looking east along the newly resurfaced street from Pacific Avenue to Bay Street and the bridge to the Seattle Highway. A stretch of 2601 feet of road, from East "G" Street to Pacific Avenue, was all new, including sidewalks, curbs and street surface. To construct the level 100- feet-wide road, the old asphalt was broken up and new concrete laid up to 20 inches thick. It was the first of the new series of Public Works Administration (PWA) contracts to be finalized and the first finished. The job took 60 days from start to finish and a ceremony was scheduled for October 21st to mark the record time. The newly surfaced road would bring traffic from the Seattle Highway directly into the downtown Tacoma shopping district. In collaboration with City of Tacoma Public Works, Parking Services, and the Community and Economic Development office, we have handpicked sites that we feel will serve each business district and the growing number of EV drivers in Tacoma. Most of our business districts currently have no access to EV charging and eight of our 15 sites are in historically underinvested areas according to the City of Tacoma Equity Index. TPU conducted outreach to abutting businesses in each district to ensure support and plans to start construction on the first location this fall. Pierce Transit Driver Shortage Prompts Service Change - Pierce Transit, like many other service-oriented businesses, is experiencing a shortage of bus drivers. Because of the operator shortage, bus trips have been delayed and missed, leading to uncertainty and inconvenience for customers. We are working hard to recruit new drivers, but the process of getting them onboard and trained takes time. As a temporary remedy, Pierce Transit will reduce service levels on some routes starting Nov. 7. The goal of this change is to give riders a schedule they can rely on, even if it offers fewer trip options. Specific route adjustments can be found on our website, PierceTransit.org. We plan to restore service levels as soon as we have the staffing levels to do so. You may contact Customer Service at 253.581.8000 with questions.

Community Vans Ready to Serve - Pierce Transit recognizes that bus, vanpool and SHUTTLE service may not work for all community organizations needing to transport groups of people in areas with limited service. The Community Van program offers passenger vans to community organizations and businesses to provide transportation to clients and customers. The service costs $1.07 per mile. Maintenance and fuel are provided by Pierce Transit. More information, and an Interest Form, can be found at PierceTransit.org/CommunityVan Contact Commute Solutions at [email protected] or 253.983.3792 for details.

Tacoma Pierce County Health Department – The Health Dept. is recommending all residents wear facial coverings when in indoor public settings where the vaccination status of those around you is unknown. The latest alert comes amid rising coronavirus cases. See Tribune article: https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/coronavirus/article253033453.html? =cpy
For updates on Covid-19 protocols, visit COVID-19 Vaccine Toolkit for Businesses and/or www.tpchd.org. If you are interested in having a short presentation from a Health Department representative, please contact Greg Tanbara at [email protected]

Pierce Transit Runner – A New Way to Travel - In summer 2020 Pierce Transit introduced a new kind of transportation service that provided a link to bus routes and a quick and car-free way to access waterfront businesses, attractions and activities along Ruston Way, called “Pierce Transit Runner”. This on-demand service allowed people to hail a ride through an app or by phone, much like an Uber or Lift ride. The Ruston Way Runner was paused due to COVID, but hopefully will return later this summer. Pierce Transit is planning to expand on this idea by adding “Runner” services in other locations. The on-demand JBLM Runner helps service personnel get onto and off base, with stops at several off-base locations. Later this year, we will launch a Runner service in the Tideflats area that connects to transit at Commerce and Tacoma Dome Station. Watch PierceTransit.org for updates on these and other Runner services. Contact Pierce Transit’s Customer Service office at 253.581.8000 with questions.

Ride the Bus Free to a Vaccination Appointment - Pierce Transit is providing free bus rides to passengers traveling to or from a COVID-19 vaccination appointment, or to volunteer at a vaccination clinic. The free round-trip is available throughout the day of a vaccination for passengers who confirm they have an appointment, typically in the form of a printed confirmation, email, text or verbal confirmation. For help planning their bus trip, people may contact Pierce Transit’s Customer Service office at 253.581.8000 (option 1, then option 1 again), use Pierce Transit’s online Trip Planner at PierceTransit.org or download the Transit app.
