Hilltop Business District

Hilltop Business District Hilltop has recently transformed from an abandoned, blighted area to a vivacious and thriving community and is still a wonderful work in progress.

The first residential neighborhood to develop outside of downtown Tacoma in the late 1800s, Historic Hilltop is home to many cultures, restaurants, churches, views and people of all classes and incomes. Many Historic Hilltop residents are descendents of Hilltop's early settlements by Germans, Italians, Scandinavians, Japanese, Southeast Asians, Filipinos, African-Americans, Russians, Jews, Hungari

ans, Austrians, and Irish who immigrated here for work or made their home here after World War II. It is an urban community that is rich in diversity, culture, and art. Hilltop’s estimated 12,500 residents are proud of their grand Victorian homes, craftsmans with huge covered porches, and lovely parks. The Hilltop area offers community gardens such as the one at 8th & I Street: Neighbors Park and the Guadelupe Garden.

Many of our clients are navigating trauma, poverty, violence, loss, illness, and immigration issues, and we are committed to supporting those who face social, political, and economic barriers. All services at Catherine Place are offered by donation; no one is turned away due to inability to pay.

Please visit the Hilltop Subway and thank them for 17 years of serving our community. Sadly, the family-owned franchise will be closing this month. Pastor Anthony Steele, Hilltop Business Association president, encouraged other small business owners to stay the course as the rail is being installed along Martin Luther King Jr. Way.
Don't forget to visit our Subway at 1112 S. 11th St., Suite #115 and say thank you, and goodbye.

Special thanks to Pastor Anthony Steele, president of the Hilltop Business Association, who helped organize one of the largest meetings to date for minority business owners on the Hilltop. On hand was Congressman Derek Kilmer, representatives from offices of Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, Tacoma Councilman Keith Blocker, along with many other community organizers. The small business summit allowed participants the chance to network with other entrepreneurs while learning just what opportunities where available to them on the Hilltop.
Interested in more meetings like this? Stay in the loop by attending our next meeting this Thursday at 8 a.m., 1223 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. See you there!

HBA President Anthony Steele spoke to KIRO 7 News today concerning gentrification taking place in the Hilltop community. While change can be painful for some, Steele, who is responsible for several parcels of property along MLK Jr. Way, said a recent spate of vandalism targeted at new business owners and residents isn't the answer.
