Wednesday June 24th, 6-7PM via Zoom:
Join us for a virtual presentation with author Joan E. Strassmann! She will be presenting on her new book, The Social Lives of Birds. It comes as no surprise that birds pay attention to each other and we pay attention to birds. Stemming from this fascination with the avian world comes a book about what it means for birds of a feather to flock together, and the stories humans have discovered and documented about their inner, and always surprising, world. Donations appreciated but not required.

Happy June! 🌼With spring winding down and summer ramping up, Pierce Conservation District is looking forward to this month's ELEVEN (11) stewardship work parties. Events like these are key to keeping our green spaces healthy and resilient, and are a fantastic way to learn fun facts about local ecosystems and connect with neighbors. 😊

PCD provides all necessary tools and training, and welcomes folks of all ages to participate in these family-friendly work parties. So, if you've been curious about habitat stewardship, want to learn more about native plants 🌿 and animals, and/or are looking for a low-commitment, outdoorsy volunteer opportunity, join one of our upcoming events!

Stop by the Tahoma Bird Alliance booth at the Point Defiance Flower and Garden show June 6th and 7th! In addition to hosting an informational booth, we’ll also be offering three classes presented by our Director, Suzanne Harkness!

✨Saturday, 4:15 - 4:30 PM | Bird Beaks
This kid-friendly presentation explores how bird beaks are specially designed like specific eating utensils to access native fruit, flowers, seeds, and even insects hidden within local habitats.

✨Sunday, 12:30 - 1:30 PM | Attracting Birds to your Garden
Learn about the resources that native plants provide to our local birds and how birds layer vertically into the habitat, similar to how different plants and trees layer into our yards at different heights and in different seasons.

✨Sunday, 3:30 - 4:00 PM | 5 W's of Bird Feeders
We'll discuss the different types and the "5W's": Who uses them, What feeder type and food to use, When birds need it, Where to place them, and Why.

See you soon!

Saturday, May 23rd, 10-Noon, Adriana Hess Wetland: This Saturday, join us for a habitat restoration workparty led by our habitat steward, Hazel Atwill! The beautiful camas pictured above was planted by volunteers in Fall of 2024 as a bulb the size of pea. This year, it finally flowered! Come be a part of making the park a better place for people and wildlife alike.

Tasks vary by month, but generally include removing invasive species, spreading mulch, minimal trimming of native plants, and occasional planting parties. Come dressed for the weather in clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Gloves, tools, water, and snacks provided. Register below with Pierce Conservation District!
