Thursday, September 10th, 6-7PM, Online Via Zoom: Join us for The Fantastical Lives of Hummingbirds, presented by local researcher Alyssa Sargent! What does a day in the life of a hummingbird entail? Where do they travel, and which rival is worth attacking? Does it pay off to stay near home, saving energy for inevitable battle, or to fly further afield—facing new perils—to find food? Cutting-edge technologies can help us to answer these questions. While pursuing her PhD, Alyssa studied hummingbirds in Colombia using "on-board" devices, which are equipped to the birds themselves. These tiny electronics allow researchers to map where individual hummingbirds disappear to, how active they really are, and how thick the competition can get at a given feeder. When the pressure is on, and the nectar is scarce, who comes out on top? Come take a peek, up close, at the swashbuckling lives of the world's smallest birds! Pay What You Can, $5, $10 or $15. What if your yard could do more?

Habitat at Home is a free program that helps Tacoma residents create outdoor spaces that support birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife—while often reducing water use, maintenance tasks, and chemicals.

Participants receive a personalized home visit, practical recommendations, and ongoing support to help transform their yard into part of Tacoma's Wild Network. Small changes in your neighborhood, multiplied across the city, can lead to a big impact for people and wildlife!

Yesterday we continued our celebration of International Owl Awareness Day (August 4th) with a special visitor! We were shocked to see this beautiful Barred Owl land on top of the bird feeder just 6 feet from our conference room window! It stayed for a few minutes there to assess the furry rodent snack situation, then tucked into a tree nearby and napped off and on for at least another 5 hours!!! THIS IS WHY WE DON’T POISON THE RATS!
