It was a blustery day for sampling the subset of our summer sites which was perfect for the wind surfers recreating at the Purdy Sand Spit! During the warmer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day) the WA Dept of Ecology and Health, Marine BEACH Program assesses water quality at many recreation sites. Due to reduced funding, the Blue Water Task Force is flattered to be doing some additional sampling to reduce monitoring gaps this season. We are happy to say the four sites we looked at this week came back with either low or undetectable levels of enterococcus. In the event of a high bacteria result, from either BWTF or the Marine BEACH Program, advisories will be made on the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department website. BWTF will be back to sampling all twelve beaches in September thanks to the partnership between and with funding from the Wow what a team!!!!

ImPRESSED with the seaweed masterpieces made at the May South Sound Session! Folks learned about the seaweed of the Salish Sea with and then got to get their hands salty and create! We love the combination of art and science. Join us for our next chapter meeting in July!

Surfrider’s 2025 Beach Bacteria Hot Spots 🦠🌊

Is your beach making you sick? Surfrider’s Blue Water Task Force has identified 10 beach bacteria hot spots across the U.S where high bacteria levels are consistently measured—putting swimmers, surfers, and families at serious risk.

Each location regularly shows dangerous levels of fecal-indicator bacteria tied to human illnesses, including gastrointestinal issues, flu-like symptoms, and serious skin conditions like MRSA and staph infections.

The Surfrider chapters testing these sites are working urgently in their communities to alert the public about these health hazards and advocate for solutions to stormwater runoff, failing sewage infrastructure, and other contributing sources of pollution.

Our ocean is under serious threat from plastics, pollution, and inaction. It needs more friends who are ready to show up, clean up, speak out, and protect it.

Join Surfrider and Jack Johnson by donating to become a friend of the ocean. The Surfrider Foundation is proud to be a non-profit partner of the SURFILMUSIC 2026 Tour. When you donate to the South Sound Chapter, Jack Johnson will match your gift.

Surfrider and Jack have been partnering since 2008, when we joined his Sleep Through the Static tour. Together, we’ve built a strong community of ocean advocates.

About the Tour: The SURFILMUSIC 2026 North American Tour will bring Jack and the band coast-to-coast for 43 shows from June through October. After a few years without a full tour, this run brings together what Jack cares about most: surf, film, music, good friends, and community. In select cities, special guests Hermanos Gutiérrez, Lake Street Dive, and G. Love will join the tour. See full dates and locations at the link in the bio.

May wraps up our official Blue Water Task Force season and we’re happy to see green across the board, indicating a low level of enterococcus bacteria across these 12 recreation sites. An enormous cheers to all the fabulous volunteers who make this community water quality monitoring happen September through May. In the warmer months, the WA Dept of Ecology BEACH Program samples recreation areas Memorial Day through Labor Day but due to reduced funding, the Blue Water Task Force is flattered to be filling in some sampling gaps this summer season. This partnership with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and the BEACH Program will ensure that more beaches are being monitored at regular intervals throughout the busy summer season. Water quality results for the South Sound Lab can be viewed online at bwtf.surfrider.org and are made possible by a partnership between and with funding from
