Beach Cleanup Data Uncovers the Dirty Truth About Plastic Pollution 📊🌊

Surfrider’s 2025 Beach Cleanup Report not only highlights Surfrider’s cleanup efforts but also demonstrates how plastic pollution impacts various coastal regions and reveals the items most often collected. The report also explores the excess of hard-to-avoid plastic packaging and the need for widespread adoption of EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) policies to hold polluters accountable for the lifecycle of the products they’re creating.

The good news is that the data shows that we’re making even bigger impacts than ever before. In 2025, Surfrider recorded the largest amount of trash ever picked up during cleanups, totaling over 340,000 pounds of trash!

To everyone who joined us at a beach cleanup on July 5th: THANK YOU. 🙌

On the dirtiest beach day of the year, our nationwide network of volunteers showed up for the ocean. 💙 Surfrider rallied over 1,800 volunteers at over 50 beach cleanups across the country, picking up 16,000 pounds of trash, and making it the single biggest day of beach cleanups so far this year.

This was one incredible day, and the work doesn’t stop here. Thanks to the help of our friends REEF and Costa, the Better Beach Alliance hosts Surfrider beach cleanups across the country all year long.

As we enjoy our beaches and waterways this summer, let’s remember it is also our responsibility to protect these special places and treat our friend, the ocean, with respect. 💙

Here are a few easy ways to keep your beach day Ocean Friendly:

🌊 Skip single-use plastics — bring your own reusable drinkware and utensils!
🌊 Pack snacks in glass, metal, or a to cut down on waste.
🌊 Toast with drinkware — perfect to reuse for your next beach day.

Every year, July 5th marks the dirtiest day on America’s beaches.

After the fireworks fizzle and the Independence Day celebrations end, our coastlines are often left covered in trash. That’s why Surfrider chapters nationwide are stepping up their cleanup efforts on July 5th to remove all the debris left after the celebrations.

The subset of our summer sites is looking good (green = low bacteria, gray = no current data). During the warmer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day) the Marine BEACH Program assesses water quality at many recreation sites. Due to reduced funding, the Blue Water Task Force is flattered to be doing some additional sampling to reduce monitoring gaps this season. We are happy to say the four sites we looked at this week came back with either low or undetectable levels of enterococcus. In the event of a high bacteria result, from either BWTF or the Marine BEACH Program, advisories will be made on the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department website. BWTF will be back to sampling all twelve beaches in September thanks to the partnership between and with funding from the
