South Sound Surfrider Washington State, South Puget Sound Chapter The South Sound Chapter is volunteer powered.

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. We do water quality testing at many South Sound sites, beach cleanups, environmental advocacy, and we have a growing list of Ocean Friendly Restaurants.

No high levels of bacteria (enterococcus) were detected during the October 6th monthly sampling from the Blue Water Task Force however, being that rainy season is around the corner, the seasonal advisory for the Thea Foss floating dock site has been posted. This reminds folks that they should avoid contact with the water for 48 hours after it rains. As we all know, if it hits the ground, it hits the sound and the Thea Foss happens to have a huge area of the Tacoma watershed drain into it. Cheers to the fabulous volunteers that make this sampling possible and the partnerships between South Sound Surfrider Harbor WildWatch and SAMI High School with funding from Rose Foundation ps: Tacoma-Pierce County Health followed up on our samplings high results from Thea’s Park last month and their results fell below the BEACH criteria, so no advisory needed. 🎉🌊

Victory! 👏 California Strengthens Defenses Against Offshore Drilling

Governor Newsom just signed AB 1448 (Hart) into law, reinforcing California’s defenses against new offshore oil and gas drilling.

California already has some of the nation’s strongest offshore drilling protections, but a dangerous loophole remained: oil companies could potentially use existing, aging rigs and pipelines in state waters to support new federal drilling.

This new law closes that loophole, prohibiting existing state infrastructure from supporting new federal offshore oil and gas development, and further increases protections against offshore drilling in state waters.

A huge thanks to the Surfrider volunteers, supporters, and partners like Business Alliance for Protecting The Pacific Coast (Business Alliance for Protecting The Pacific Coast) who urged state representatives and the Governor to make this important bill law.

Heads up! Bacteria levels are on the rise at Thea’s Park. We’ve alerted the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and will keep folks in the loop on possible follow up. Otherwise stay tuned for the next round of Blue Water Task Force monitoring on October 6th (results take 24 hours to incubate so expect a post a day later). BWTF samples monthly during the “off season” because we know people want to safely play in the Puget Sound all year round and state funding only covers monitoring Memorial Day through Labor Day. Community monitoring extends the BEACH Program’s efforts to increase water quality awareness to more sites throughout the year and when high results happen, TPCHD is an awesome partner in confirming possible issues and making public advisories. We’re also so thankful for all the volunteers and the partnerships between South Sound Surfrider Harbor WildWatch and SAMI High School, that make this sampling possible with funding from Rose Foundation

School is back in session which means Blue Water Task Force is back in full swing, conducting monthly monitoring of public recreation sites for harmful bacteria September through May. BWTF sampling fills in the “off season” gap because we know people play in the Puget Sound all year round and not just during the BEACH Program sampling window in the warmer months, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Cheers to complimentary monitoring! The BWTF samples collected on September 15th had two sites in the high bacteria range that were resampled today (9/17/26). We will have updated results from Thea Foss Floating Dock and Thea’s Park tomorrow! Thanks to the amazing volunteers (and their furry side kicks!) who make this monitoring possible, as well as the partnerships between South Sound Surfrider Harbor WildWatch and SAMI High School with funding from Rose Foundation

Teamwork makes the dream work! Our summer sampling concludes with low bacteria numbers across the four sites (green=low enterococcus, gray=no current data). These four samples help supplement testing for the Marine BEACH Program which assess water quality at many recreation sites Memorial Day through Labor Day. In the event of persistent high bacteria results, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department issues an advisory on their website where you can also subscribe for email alerts. With summer wrapping up, the full Blue Water Task Force sampling kicks off September 15 and we will continue to sample a dozen recreation sites once per month through May because we know people play in the Puget Sound ALL year round! Beach Cleanup Data Uncovers the Dirty Truth About Plastic Pollution 📊🌊

Surfrider’s 2025 Beach Cleanup Report not only highlights Surfrider’s cleanup efforts but also demonstrates how plastic pollution impacts various coastal regions and reveals the items most often collected. The report also explores the excess of hard-to-avoid plastic packaging and the need for widespread adoption of EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) policies to hold polluters accountable for the lifecycle of the products they’re creating.

The good news is that the data shows that we’re making even bigger impacts than ever before. In 2025, Surfrider recorded the largest amount of trash ever picked up during cleanups, totaling over 340,000 pounds of trash!
