Pierce Transit Offering Free Rides to Warming Centers, Shelter Locations

Rides free through the close of service on Friday, Dec. 19

The Puget Sound area is expecting windy conditions, more rain and colder temperatures for the next several days. To help those who need access to transportation get out of the weather and shelter during cold temperatures and anticipated power outages, Pierce Transit is partnering with the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management to provide free bus, Runner and SHUTTLE paratransit (for registered SHUTTLE customers) rides to local warming centers and shelters.

The free rides to warming centers and shelters are in effect through the close of Pierce Transit’s service on Friday, Dec. 19. The free round trips are available throughout the day and evening for passengers who tell the driver they are traveling to or from a warming center or shelter. Shelters are open in Tacoma, Lakewood, Puyallup, Parkland and Gig Harbor.

For more information on shelters, visit PierceCountywa.gov/8220/Homeless-Emergency-Shelter-Availability.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of community member Mattice Hoyt.

Mattice was more than a well-known community member, small business owner, and advocate in Central Tacoma — she was a passionate voice for all of Tacoma. A disabled veteran, cancer survivor, and tireless advocate for accessibility, she dedicated herself to improving transparency, access, and inclusion across our city.

Through her natural comedic ability, Mattice brought civic engagement to life and wasn’t afraid to speak up or ask the hard questions. Her courage, humor, and heart made Tacoma a better place for so many.

She will be deeply missed by all of us here, and we know her passing is a devastating loss for our entire community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her presence.
