Have you had to deal with a Ratio Utility Billing System (R.U.B.S)?

With R.U.B.S., tenants receive bills that don't reflect their individual usage, even subsidizing common areas of the building. These systems make it impossible to budget or plan effectively for utility charges.
There is no way to opt out of R.U.B.S., and tenants even get charged fees for the "privilege" of having no real control over their bills.

Here in Tacoma, we have tenants who are standing up to these types of junk systems!
Every tenant deserves respect and transparency for all of their bills!

Tenants can be evicted for not paying utilities even if they have paid rent – tenants and their allies are fighting back

The National Low Income Housing Coalition's Out of Reach 2026 report reveals that nationwide, a full-time worker must earn $34.73 per hour to afford a modest two-bedroom rental, with average wages falling $9.89 short of this requirement. The report highlights a critical, nationwide shortage of affordable housing, finding that in no state can a minimum-wage worker afford a two-bedroom unit at market rent. Tacoma Tenants member leaders just held our first citywide union launch planning meeting. We figured it was time, with membership growth exploding, existing buildings running major escalations, several new buildings organizing, and another portfolio union launch just around the corner. Expect to see and hear lots more from these powerful, inspiring folks soon.

Seattle Mayor and longtime tenant organizer Katie Wilson has proposed new ordinance banning "junk fees." Members from across our unions and tenants citywide are reporting all sorts of terrible junk fees in Tacoma. If our neighbors to the north can fight them, then we can, too!

Residents at the Knick Apartments in Albany just launched their supermajority tenant union! Huge news!

And they just shared the win at today's Tenant Union Federation (TUF) Union School, where nine of our Tacoma Tenants leaders joined HUNDREDS of organizers from around the country.
