The KNKX interview with leaders from North Slope Tenant Union and Newcastle Tenant Union is now up on their socials. Give it a listen and some love!

Of the six Tacoma buildings that have voted to unionize this year, five are owned by a couple that lives in California. The tenants cite numerous grievances related to maintenance and fees — many of which stem from what they describe as a sense of apathy from their "absentee landlords.”

“They only view us as a source of income, as a money pit,” said Isaac Galvon, who lives at the recently-unionized Marguerite Apartments in Tacoma. “And we’re people. We live here, we work.”

The landlords have thus far refused to meet the tenants at the bargaining table.

But organizers say they plan to keep applying pressure. And a rent strike is not off the table.

Leaders from our North Slope Tenant Union and Newcastle Tenant Union recently spoke to KNKX about the terrible conditions that drove them to organize, the relationships and community they've built, and the power of building a portfolio-wide tenant union.

Now, we just need absentee landlords Rob Hoover, Candace Hoover, and Ann Limbourne to come negotiate.

The Hoover portfolio's new property management company seems to like gouging tenants with outrageous new junk fees, but apparently doesn't like paying their Marguerite Apartments utility bills!

This is just one of the many reasons members of North Slope, Newcastle and New York Tenant Unions are demanding the Hoovers negotiate with their members.

North Slope Tenant Union leader Moira's speech from last weekend's union launch. A year of ongoing landlord neglect and mistreatment drove her to join neighbors in organizing NSTU. As she reveals in her speech, unions now represent over 70 percent of landlords Rob Hoover, Candace Hoover, and Ann Limbourne's Tacoma portfolio, controlling over $50,000 a month in rent.

NSTU, New York, and Newcastle tenants are taking major actions and risks just to achieve basic dignity in their homes. Now it's up to the Hoovers and Limbourne to see that dignity, agree to negotiate, and hopefully prevent the situation from escalating further.

Because, as Moira says ending her speech... "three strikes, you're out!"

North Slope Tenant Union member Quinn shared their story of building neglect and dealing with multiple terrible property management firms during Sunday's union launch. This drove them to join the movement, which combined represents over 70 percent of Tacoma properties owned by absentee landlords Candace Hoover, Robert Hoover and Ann Limbourne.
