On July 22, Anna Hess was named the Rotarian of the Year for the Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club. She joined the Club in January 2025.

In presenting the award to her, Club President Lisa Jonhson said, “Anna exemplifies the true spirit of being a Rotarian. She steps in the lead, supports others through service, and always brings joy and a little bit of whimsy to everything she does.”

On Saturday morning, July 25, a group of Tacoma Sunrise Rotarians, family members, and friends worked for two hours at the Emergency Food Network (EFN) in Lakewood repacking 2,400 pounds (about 1,200 individual bags) of pasta to help fight hunger in our community.

EFN distributes the food to more than 70 food banks and other outlets throughout Pierce County.

Hunger is one of the key issues our Club focuses on, and we have been a big supporter of EFN for many years. We have four more EFN repacks set for later this year.

ENCOURAGING EDUCATION: Hunt School Students of the Quarter

On May 20, students from Hunt Middle School gave brief presentations to our Club. Each student had been chosen as a Student of the Quarter.

Many family members, teachers and friends were also there to show their support of the students' accomplishments. An inspiring morning, indeed!

FIGHTING HUNGER
Our Club is committed to fighting hunger in our community. We do six food repacks a year to support the Emergency Food Network and the great work they do.

We work hard, have some fun, and feel good about helping make a difference in our community.

Our next repack is set for Saturday morning, July 25, from 9 to 11. You do NOT have to be a member of our Club to help out. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Rod Koon ([email protected]).

PORTHOLES 3: A Great FUNraising Event!

More than 120 people attended our Club's third annual Portholes to the Future FUNraiser on May 30.

Axes were thrown, putt-putt was played, great food was enjoyed, and people had a casual, fun time.

Thanks to the generosity of the event's sponsors and event attendees, our Club raised about $68,000 to support the many partnerships and programs we focus on in our community and around the world.

To celebrate the City of Tacoma’s 150th anniversary, Tacoma Historical Society (THS) held a dinner celebration at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center on November 12.

The festive dinner event included an historic video, a great dinner, and a silent and live auction.

And of course, there was a special birthday cake, which was made by Celebrity Cake Studio.

Tacoma Historical Society honored these four people with a Star of Destiny Award: Senator Rosa Franklin, Senator Steve Conway, Judge Art Wang, and Patsy Surh-O’Connell.

The Society’s top award is called the Murray Morgan Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to efforts to preserve and communicate local history.

The award was presented to Rick Carr by Jim Catalinich, the interim president of Tacoma Historical Society's board of directors (pictured below).

Rick Carr is a descendant of Tacoma pioneer Job Carr. He is also a charter member our Tacoma Sunrise Club, which started back in 1983.

On November 19, our Club honored four of the six Students of the Quarter from Hunt Middle School in Tacoma at our breakfast meeting. The students were: Mia Firman, Brenden Pico, Hendrix Saulter, and Whitney Ware.

Each of the students made brief remarks at our meeting, which had a big crowd consisting not only of Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club members and Hunt staff members, but also the parents and family members of the four honored students.

Prior to the student presentations, Club members received an update on the school and how they work with students to encourage academic excellence as well as the importance of community service.

Each student also received a certificate from our Club recognizing their achievement.

The Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club works to support Hunt Middle School in a variety of ways throughout the school year.
