A Message from the Tacoma Urban League Board of Directors

For more than 50 years, the Tacoma Urban League has stood with our community in the enduring work of advancing equity and opportunity. That work is bigger than any one person. It takes community, dedicated partners, and so much more.

After thoughtful consideration, the Board of Directors determined that Desirée Wilkins Finch's tenure as President and CEO of the Tacoma Urban League would not continue. We are grateful for Desirée's leadership. Her contributions to our programs, our partnerships, and the people we serve have left a lasting mark on the League and on Tacoma. We thank her for her service and wish her well in the next phase of her journey.

Our commitment to the Tacoma community remains steady: strong Board oversight and a continued focus on programs, partnerships, and the services you rely on. We are focused on the pillars that have always guided us: Youth Development and Education; Jobs and Economic Empowerment; Health and Quality of Life; Housing and Community Development; and Justice and Civic Engagement. We will also continue deepening our movement building across Tacoma and the South Puget Sound.

The Board will provide organizational oversight through this transition and is preparing a thoughtful search for an Interim CEO. We will share updates with the community as that process develops.

This moment is also an invitation. Alongside this transition, we are launching a strategic roadmap process. The roadmap will guide our work over the next 18 to 24 months and lay a foundation for our next CEO, and it will be built with our community, not just for it. We want to hear from the members, families, partners, and neighbors who have made TUL what it is. More information on how to participate will follow in the coming weeks.

We are grateful for your trust, your patience, and your partnership as we move forward together.

For questions, media inquiries, and partnership opportunities, please contact Phyllis McElroy, Board Chair, at [email protected].

Thank you,
The Tacoma Urban League Board of Directors

Health is shaped by more than access to a doctor. The 2025 Pierce County Community Health Assessment highlights structural racism, housing, transportation, and economic stability as key drivers of health outcomes. What does that mean for Tacoma and South Puget Sound? It reminds us that where people live, learn, work, and travel can influence their health and well-being, and that health equity is a justice issue.

At Tacoma Urban League, our five pillars are connected: Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, Housing, and Justice. We work alongside our community to advance opportunity, advocate for civil rights and racial justice, and help build a more equitable future.

Stay engaged! Join community conversations, volunteer, become a member, or support our mission. Every voice and action helps strengthen our community.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 💗

Early screening can save lives. For Black women, breast cancer is often diagnosed at younger ages and can be more deadly, which makes regular mammograms, knowing your family history, and talking with your healthcare provider especially important.

Tacoma Urban League is proud to partner with Leaders in Women’s Health to help connect community members with free mammograms. Learn more and find out how to access this opportunity: https://leadersinwomenshealth.org/

If you are due for a mammogram, make a plan to get screened. Encourage your mother, sisters, aunties, daughters, friends, and loved ones to do the same. We can support one another by sharing information, offering encouragement, and making our health a priority.

Tacoma and South Puget Sound, let’s stand together for prevention, early detection, and the health of our community! Health is Wealth! 💗

Give blood. Save one of our own. ❤️

The Tacoma Urban League is hosting a Sickle Cell Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross Sickle Cell Fighters campaign, and we need our community to show up strong!

Nearly 100K people in the U.S. live with sickle cell disease. One in 365 Black babies born in the U.S. has sickle cell disease, and the closest blood match for Black patients often comes from Black donors.

Your donation could help save a life in our community.
