Western Cascade Fruit Society- Tahoma Chapter June 4, 2026 Meeting

SUBJECT: Nuts about Nuts!

When: June 4th Doors open at 6:30 PM. Meeting begins at 7:00 PM
Where: Collins Grange #893, 3404 120th St E, Tacoma, WA 98446

Dear Nut Lovers-

For our June 4th meeting, we will be exploring the ins and outs of growing nuts in the Pacific NW. We all know English Walnuts and Filberts grow here. But, did you know you can grow ALMONDS? Also, The Tschidas have two trees that bear the edible variety of chestnut. The subject of Black Walnuts, Oaks and acorns may also come up.

Bring your personal experiences with growing nuts if you've tried them. In general, bring seeds, seedlings and fruit to share. Potluck dishes are welcome, especially ones with nuts!

Very Best Regards Always,

Helen J. Wilson- Western Cascade Fruit Society Tahoma Chapter President

Subject: WCFS Tahoma Chapter Upcoming Meeting April 2, 2026

At: Collins Grange #893, 3404 120th St. E., Tacoma, WA 98446

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00pm

Dear Members & Friends-

In March, we had another interesting and enjoyable meeting at the Collins Grange. Despite the building’s furnace not functioning, we warmed ourselves with visions of growing sub-tropicals such as figs, quince, persimmon, prickly pear cactus and Jujube. We also considered the cultivation of Loquat and olive, but it’s still too cool in Western Washington for those to bear fruit.

There were starts available for desert king fig and himrod grape. We had quince jelly and quince paste (membrillo) with cheese and
crackers, giving us an idea of the different uses of quince.

Robert Sweet brought a whole flat of fat soft-neck garlic and some kiwi to share. As always, the best part of the meeting came after the
presentation, when members new and long-time mingled and shared their questions and expertise.

For our April 2nd 2026 meeting, we will have speakers Darby Kruger and Brad
Cooper from the Vashon Island Fruit Club. They will share their expertise in conducting a successful cider squeeze. Also, we will
have a photographic tour of Tschida Farm, where Marcia and Bob Tschida have graciously offered to host the WCFS Tahoma Cider Squeeze in October. Aside from being fun, this event, (right after a
cider-making workshop in September) promises to be a great way to interest potential new members.

Very Best Wishes Always,

Western Cascade Fruit Society - Jan/Feb Minutes & March 5, 2026 Meeting Agenda

Hi All-

We had great presentations in January and February 2026! In January Robert Sweet and Helen Wilson (me) concentrated on winter care of grapes, raspberries and strawberries. In February we went over strategies for pest control for the coming year. We began with the current month and tapped into the wisdom of the group so we could each make our personal calendar of monthly tactics to try.

Mark Brose had wood to make starts for Interlaken grapes, Mulberry, Elderberry, Red Currant and Brown Turkey Figs.

As always, there were interesting snacks!

Please find attached the minutes for January and February, (for approval) as well as the agenda for March 5th.

I was really pumped about pruning grapes.

Hope to see you all this Thursday March 5, 2026 at The Collins Grange #893, 3404 120th St. East, Tacoma, WA 98446. Meeting starting at 7:00pm.

January Meeting Coming Up!
“Grapes, Strawberries and Raspberries”

Greetings to all, and best wishes for a happy New Year! It was decided at the December meeting to have the January meeting on the second Thursday (January 8, 2026) of the month, as the first was a holiday.

It might be winter, but as you know, there's lots to discuss and do for the upcoming growing season. As always, we'll be answering questions about growing fruit in our cool, damp mid-latitude marine climate. Specifically, Robert Sweet and Helen Wilson (me) will be discussing the ins and outs of small fruit care. Robert will bring samples of grape wood to help our viticulturists with pruning questions. I will be talking about raspberries and growing strawberries in containers.

Bring your questions, plant starts, treats to share if you've got them.

See you at 7:00 PM on January 8th 2026, at Collins Grange #893, 3404 120th Street East , Tacoma, WA 98446.
