Today we honor the day when the last enslaved people in the United States, a quarter million strong, learned they were free.

The confederate military had been disbanded 24 days earlier, the Confederacy had fallen 71 days prior, and President Lincoln had declared their freedom 900 days before... but June 19th, 1865 is when it finally became real. 161 years later we still feel the long shadow of slavery.

This day does not only mark the end of slavery but the start of rebuilding a country where that freedom is real and felt by everyone. We honor that history today, and the generations who have fought, and continue to fight, for freedom that's more than a promise on paper.

The Herbal Gardens bargaining committee submitted another comprehensive proposal today and received a response from the Employer. A crack in the brick wall of rejections and refusals opened up, allowing some small steps to be made. We're back at the bargaining table next Thursday, June 25.

Nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup are currently in contract negotiations with their employer, MultiCare. They are asking the people to sign a letter in support of a fair contract which would tackle the staffing issues that drive nurse burnout and erode patient care.

Corporate greed recognizes no limits, so solidarity must cross industry lines. UFCW 367 stands with them.

Getting terminated feels like the end but for Karlene, it wasn't. She reached out to her rep and together they made the case. A simple mistake can be a serious learning experience. She got her job back and now Karlene has a second chance at a life-long career.

A termination is severe but it isn't always the last word.

The staff at Nexus Legal Counsel have joined UFCW 367, and we're proud to welcome them into our union family.

What makes this moment especially worth celebrating is how it happened. The law firm chose to voluntarily recognize the staff's overwhelming choice to unionize. There were no delays, no resistance, no drawn-out fight. Here's a leader who understands something too many employers miss: unions are good for business.

Organized workplaces have lower turnover, higher productivity, and stronger employee trust. When workers have a seat at the table, everyone benefits — including the employer. Workers don't always organize because the system is broken. Sometimes they organize because they know what they have is worth protecting. Now the process will start with open hands instead of closed fists holding picket signs.

We look forward to getting to the bargaining table and building something good together.
