"I tell God all the time, 'Thank you!’”, says Lillie.

This is Lillie.

She moved to Tacoma in 1973, raising her son on her own while working two jobs and attending school full time. She went on to start a small business in the Hilltop and spent years as a social worker and foster care provider.

Today, Lillie lives with rheumatoid arthritis, and when her cracked walkway caused a fall, she reached out to our Aging in Place program.

Our team built a new walkway—wide enough for a wheelchair if she ever needs one—so she can stay safe in the home she loves.

Everyone deserves to age safely at home. Learn more about our Aging in Place program at the link in our bio.

Alison’s Legacy
She was in the room where it all began. And she’s still showing up!

Meet Alison: a founder, a mathematician, a builder, and one of the few people who can tell the full story of Tacoma Pierce County Habitat's 40-year history simply because she lived every chapter of it.

A few highlights:
Helped charter TPCHH in 1985 after hearing Habitat founder Millard Fuller speak in Seattle
Served as the affiliate's early treasurer
Has been part of Women Build since 2001 and still leads the UPS Campus Chapter on build sites today

When asked about her legacy and the legacy she hopes Tacoma Habitat leaves, Alison says, “I mean, it's life-changing on so many different levels. As a volunteer, to know you're a small part of someone's dream. You’ve helped change their lives. It's amazing to be part of that.”

“I’m excited that we’re still here after 40 years, and that we have a really strong affiliate,” she says. “I’m excited to see more and more Habitat neighborhoods popping up with cute houses!”

This is one of 40 stories we're honoring this year. Follow along for more.

Let's talk about the class that could genuinely change your life.

Our Keys to Homeownership Series is a free, multi-session program designed to get you from "I wonder if homeownership is possible for me?" to "I know exactly what my next step is."

Swipe to see what each session covers.

Session 1: Goal Setting
This session helps you start building a roadmap to achieving your goals.

Session 2: Creating a Spending Plan
Learn how to allocate your income in a way that actually moves you toward ownership.

Session 3: Managing Credit
Your credit score is one of the most important numbers in your homeownership journey. Learn what drives it, what hurts it, and how to improve it, no matter where you're starting from.

Session 4: Home Financing Options
Mortgages, down payments, Habitat's lending model, and more. By the end of this session, you'll know exactly how home financing works and what's available to you.

Sessions are offered virtually and in-person throughout the month. It's free. And it's the most important financial class you probably never knew was available to you right here in Tacoma!

Meet Linda! Like many working parents, she dreamt of owning a home to create stability for her daughter and son. She explored houses on the open market, but she struggled to find a lender who could offer her a home loan, often being denied or told that her pre-qualification was too low.

As her rent rose, Linda worried about having a place to live, "I remember thinking I could end up homeless with my rent increasing every year."

After discovering the Habitat Homeownership Program through the Habitat Stores and receiving encouragement from her mother, Linda submitted an application. Six months later, she is proudly settled into her own home with her children and enjoys the security of an affordable, predictable mortgage.

It takes a village! 👷‍♀️💙A few weeks ago, our staff, volunteers, board members, and community members came together to raise the walls for our Proctor Place duplex! These walls were raised for two special homes: one, The House the Stores Built, which is dedicated to our former CEO, Maureen Fife, and the other, our annual Building on Faith house, honoring the faith partners who have long supported our work. 🏠
