meet Denny

Denny is a 79-year-old Army Veteran who has lived in his home for 12 years. When his leaky metal roof began causing damage to his ceiling, Denny’s case manager reached out to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity.

Denny was drafted during the Vietnam War and spent a year and a half in Germany in the late 1960s. After his service, Denny had a long career working in aerospace both at Boeing and for an airplane parts manufacturer in Kent.

With assistance from a Home Depot Foundation Repair Corps grant, Tacoma Habitat’s Aging in Place program was able to work with a contractor to clean and repair Denny’s roof and apply a new silicone coating that stopped the existing leaks and will prevent new ones.

He is grateful for the help from Habitat’s Aging in Place program and the Home Depot Foundation and hopes that sharing his story will help other Veterans receive assistance.

Meet Habitat Homeowner Kyle!

Kyle, a single father of two wonderful children, was searching for a place they could truly call home. Through a friend who worked as a mortgage lender, he was connected to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity. That connection led him to a realtor who encouraged him to apply for a Tacoma Habitat renovated home that had been listed on the MLS.

"I knew right away that it was the right house for us," Kyle said.

After applying and being accepted into the Homeownership Program, Kyle began completing his sweat equity hours alongside his daughter. Together, they volunteered during Habitat's "demo days" for renovated homes, helping remove old interior finishes and prepare the properties for renovation. The experience gave them the opportunity to work side by side while contributing to the creation of affordable housing for future homeowners.

Each year, there are about 4.5 million emergency department visits due to falls among older people.

A few weeks ago, our Aging in Place Critical Home Repair Team partnered with the Lakewood YMCA to host a Fall Prevention Workshop for aging Pierce County residents who would like to learn how to prevent injuries due to falls.

Our Aging in Place Team also provides critical home repairs to seniors and disabled Veterans throughout Pierce County, allowing people to age comfortably and confidently in their own homes.
