Time to get on my soapbox here for a bit. Just seen news that more venues are closing here in the area. Sure there are outside factors that causes these things; increasing rent and a terrible economy, but it all boils down to one thing: low show attendance.
We are feeling this at Real Art too; show attendance for local gigs and regional small tours are at an all time low. We have some of the lowest ticket prices for gigs in the area; as well as offering up student discounted tickets funded by the City of Tacoma…the bottom line is that’s not enough.
WE NEED YOU TO COME TO SHOWS!
You can’t be a part of the music scene if you only go to see the hyped bands that come to our area. People have no problem with shelling out big bucks to see their favorite artist play that hit song on an album they wrote 25 years ago…but what about those artists that are up and coming, writing new material right now? Real deal is there will be no more hyped bands if you don’t go to local gigs and hype up your local scene.
The music industry has sold you a lie about the overnight celebrity or breakout artist that manifested out of thin air. The truth is your favorite artists were grinding (FOR YEARS!) in basements, garages, house shows, and small venues long before they broke into the mainstream or any other type of success that brought them any substantial notoriety. Bands like Terror, Knocked Loose, Avenged Sevenfold, Car Seat Headrest, Scowl, Sunami, Drain, Dying Wish, Turnstile, Nirvana, and Foo Fighters all started this way.
Go to shows, get involved in the scene, watch every band, and buy merch.
