Yippee! I've learned so much and made real progress... and yet, ADHD still finds ways to humble me.

I needed to caulk the seam between the wall and baseboards. I was wearing my everyday clothes. A little voice in my head suggested, "You should put on your painting clothes first."

I ignored it.

"This is caulking, not painting. I'll be fine."

Later, I discovered dried caulk on my slacks. Apparently, dried caulk is every bit as stubborn as dried paint when it comes to clothing.

Progress doesn't mean perfection. Sometimes it just means laughing, learning, and remembering your painting clothes next time.

A diagnosis is a beginning, not a definition.

Many people have walked the path of discovering they have ADHD, but your journey will be uniquely your own. You'll notice different things, face different challenges, and uncover different strengths.

A diagnosis doesn't change who you are. It doesn't add anything new to your personality or take anything away.

It simply gives a name to experiences you've already been having—and a clearer path forward.

Parenting a child with ADHD often requires more than traditional parenting approaches.

Children with ADHD frequently experience challenges with attention, emotions, impulsivity, and executive functioning at a higher level of intensity than their peers. As a result, they may need extra support, more patience, and different behavior-management strategies to help them succeed.

It’s not about lowering expectations—it’s about providing the tools and support they need to meet them.

An ADHD diagnosis is not the end of the story—it’s the beginning of understanding.

Once a diagnosis is made, families can move forward with clarity. They can explore treatment options, learn effective strategies, and build supports that help their child thrive.

Knowledge opens the door to better social, emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

When we understand a child’s needs, we can create an environment where they can succeed.

ADHD is about much more than attention.

Symptoms such as impulsivity, difficulty with self-regulation, and increased risk-taking can affect many areas of adult life. Research has found that adults with ADHD may experience higher rates of challenges related to decision-making, relationships, finances, driving, and other aspects of daily living compared to those without ADHD.

Understanding these risks isn't about judgment—it's about awareness, support, and creating strategies that help people thrive.

Hormones matter.

For girls and women with ADHD, changes in estrogen can affect dopamine, mood, focus, and overall functioning. That means ADHD symptoms may feel worse at certain times of life or certain times of the month.

This is one more reason ADHD in females deserves more attention, more research, and more informed care.

Thank you again to Prof. J.J. Sandra Kooij, MD, for helping bring attention to this important connection.

If this helped you understand ADHD in females a little better, please share it.
