As many of you have come to know him, BBB, or as he is called in this article, Bastian Rodriguez, has made it safely home to Guatemala after choosing deportation over another quarter decade of being caged by ICE. While this was never the ideal we hoped for, we are reassured by the prospect that he will be with his family from which he has been separated for so many years. We want to thank all of you who contributed to the effort to free him from detention into a safe home here in the US. While the violence of ICE prevails and the system proves itself to be unjust, we must continue to fight for progress and justice and to ensure everyone a right to a healthy home and community. Update (3/5):
The Immigration system has just doubled down on their denial of release. We will double down on our efforts to and end the unjust system of caging human beings. Halt calls/emails to Jayapal and Smith! : they are reacting!📳

After contacting the offices of our State Congressional Representatives we have received promising indications for assistance in investigations from both Representatives Jayapal and Smith. As of yet we are still awaiting a responsive reply from other contacts in our initial call to action.
➡️With respect to the responses from Jayapal and Smith we see NO reason at moment to continue making calls or pressuring their offices, ✔focus instead on NATHALIE ASHER as number 1 priority, Jay Inslee and Senators Murray and Cantwell.📞📞 We are hoping this will help Representatives Smith and Jayapal focus on diverting their time towards acting for BBB instead of responding to repeated messages.

The UW Center for Human Rights just published another report this time detailing the unchecked health and safety conditions with updates on Coronavirus. They had 3 takeaways:

1. It is clear that there are endemic health and safety concerns at the Northwest Detention Center, although the full dimension of their gravity remains unknown due to a lack of transparency on the part of ICE and GEO.
2. It is clear that DHS and ICE’s oversight mechanisms have failed to correct abuses.
3. It is clear that local and state authorities have chosen not to exercise their regulatory authority to ensure the health and safety of all Washingtonians.

UWCHR reports on concerns related to health and safety in immigration detention at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA, including COVID-19 risks; and reviews transparency and oversight mechanisms including the potential for increased state and local regulation.

Representative Adam Smith's office called us back today regarding BBB and the conditions at NWDC. They noted they had gotten numerous calls and emails about BBB and they are in the process of conducting an investigation into the complaints regarding NWDC and into BBB's case in particular. I post this to let you know your efforts are making a difference.

Our goal is to get BBB home for the holidays. Let's push hard and get this done, so we have something worth celebrating in 2020.
