Our coalition rally and fundraiser had a huge turnout last night with at least 155 people attending with great energy! Powerful coalition representatives spoke, including state senator@senatoryasmintrudeau State Representative .scott.43 Tenant Union Federation national director and local tenant leaders!

Thank you so, so much to everyone who chipped in, helping us raise $8,943 so far!!! This was an impressive collective effort which will help pay for our new canvassers, mailers, and video ads.

For those who missed the energizing fundraiser and would still like to chip in, we still need your help to reach the $10,000 goal we had budgeted for this fundraiser. We need help paying for a 2nd mailer and new ads to respond to the blatantly false ads flooding our mailboxes and screens from the corporate landlord lobby which is literally spending over half a million dollars, smashing all records for political campaigns in Tacoma’s entire history!!!

“GRE Shirley Tacoma LLC” is Goodman Real Estate—a multi-billion-dollar corporate empire based in Seattle. GRE dumped $175,000 into the opposition PAC—funding the majority of their war chest against Tacoma tenants.

George Petrie was Washington state’s top Trump donor in 2021, starting “three weeks after the Jan. 6 fiasco at the Capitol” (Seattle Times, 8/11/2021). After bankrolling Trump’s violent attempt to overturn our national democracy, Petrie is now spending big to corrupt our local democracy.

“I’m a small Tacoma landlord, and I helped write Measure 1.”

When we talk about tenant protections, we have to be specific about who is most impacted. Tenants of color have been systemically kept out of the homeownership market, making them most susceptible to corporate slumlords who push illegal rent increases, neglect units, and weaponize junk fees to displace working families.
Measure 1 is our chance to push back. It puts enforceable teeth on tenant protections so families who have been systemically displaced have the chance to put down roots and access stable, dignified housing.

Vote YES on Measure 1 by Nov. 3rd! 🗳️

What protections will small landlords have through Safe Homes for All Measure 1? Liz is a small landord and she’s excited about the educational resources that Measure 1 will create to help her ensure she is honoring her tenants rights. The current system is confusing and resources are not provided in a concise platform. Measure 1 changes that so that small landlords know exactly what they need to do to keep their tenants in safe, stable housing.

The opposition claims that Measure 1 will decrease property values and drive small landlords out. The fact is that Measure 1 is written specifically to target corportate slumlords. Small landlords with 25 units or less are exempt from investigation and cost recovery fees. The bottom line - if you’re a good landlord, you will not receive fines. Did you receive a panic text today claiming Safe Homes for All will cost Tacoma “$10 million”? Here is what you need to know about where that text came from—and why it’s total corporate disinformation.

That mass text was funded by $175,000 in opposition PAC cash dumped by Goodman Real Estate (GRE)—a multi-billion-dollar Seattle landlord company whose CEO was Washington’s #1 Donald Trump donor in the year following January 6th. Instead of maintaining their properties or fixing chronic disrepair, outside real estate moguls are pouring six figures into Tacoma to mislead voters and protect their bottom line.

Here are the facts:

1. Measure 1 pays for itself. It does not take a single dime from fire, police, or libraries. It is funded through modest annual per-unit fees on landlords ($15–$35/unit), with chronic corporate bad actors covering investigation costs through penalties.

2. Comparable programs across Washington (Lakewood, Olympia, Vancouver, Bellingham) operate successfully on modest fee structures at roughly one-tenth of the city manager’s unsubstantiated claim.

3. The city spokesperson already admitted to The News Tribune that the city has conducted no impact studies to back up that $10M figure and that enforcement would not necessarily cut general funds.
