45 Lee Dr Food Drive

45 Lee Dr Food Drive Helping to put a dent in hunger and not just at the holidays. She was 7. That year we started our Summer Food Drive.

**We have been working since the beginning of Covid to help those who have little and now those who perhaps never have had to ask for help before. There is still many more who are in need and the food pantry has been doing it’s best to keep up with demand. We are collecting donations of non perishable food (not opened and not expired) and personal care items (shampoo/conditioner, body wash, lotion

— which Can be used if it had been opened).
13 years ago, my daughter asked me why food drives were only in the winter around the holidays when people are hungry all year long. Some years we only were able to collect a few bags. Those years we donated to local families and the Girl Scouts food drives. We also collected toys at Christmas for the schools and household items and gift cards for local families in need. Slowly we worked our way up to participating with The Food Bank of South Jersey for their “Students Change Hunger” program, collecting over 5,500 lbs in 3 years and a total of over 8,500 lbs in 8 years. This year we will be working with local food banks in our community to help our neighbors this summer.

13 years of neighbors helping neighbors

13 years ago, my daughter asked me why food drives were only in the winter around the holidays when people are hungry all year long. She was 7. That year, we started our Summer Food Drive. We put up signs around the neighborhood and left a bin on our driveway for drop offs. There were years when we were only able to collect a few bags and we donated those to local families and the Girl Scouts food drives.

Slowly we worked our way up to participating with The Food Bank of South Jersey for their “Students Change Hunger” program, collecting over 5,500 lbs in 3 years and a total of over 8,500 lbs in 8 years.

After a few years we were able to collect at a local grocery store, sitting for hours and hours, a full weekend, in the lobby, increasing our collection exponentially. Since then, they changed their policy and do not allow anyone to set up in the lobby. We are hoping to find another store to allow us to collect or to sponsor us.

Then we learned of a local church pantry that was run by only a few women with no backing by any large groups. They would help anyone who came, not turning anyone away. When their shelves went bare, they refilled them with their own money. We knew that was where we needed to help.
