A Tiny Home for Good

A Tiny Home for Good We provide affordable, supportive, permanent housing for individuals who have faced homelessness. (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2010).

Well maintained, dignified, and safe housing is necessary for people to live a safe and productive life. Unfortunately safe and dignified housing is a struggle to afford housing for people who earn their income from day-to-day labor or temporary assistance. Often individuals are forced to turn to the streets and emergency shelters as permanent residencies, which cannot provide the support they nee

d to get on their feet. Individuals facing chronic homelessness have a life expectancy of 48 to 52 years (O’Connell, 2005) and are significantly less likely to have regular healthcare than the general population (Whitbeck, 2009). Although people facing chronic homelessness only make up ten percent of the homeless population, they utilize fifty percent of public service resources, placing a significant burden on community organizations. So what can be done? In order to permanently house those facing chronic homelessness, there must be an appropriate housing model and support structures readily available. A Tiny Home for Good, Inc. constructs and maintains tiny homes for people struggling with homelessness. Homes are built on vacant city lots, three homes per lot. The homes are between 150 and 200 square feet and are equipped with all the amenities of a regular home. Once built, each home is offered to one individual facing chronic homelessness. Rent is determined on a sliding scale dependent on the resident’s income. Each resident is connected with a professional care manager through a partnership with one of the several care management organizations in the Syracuse area.

Last night, we celebrated 10 years of A Tiny Home for Good surrounded by the people who have made this work possible.

Tenants, supporters, volunteers, partners, board members, and staff came together to reflect on a decade of creating homes and building community. We shared stories from the last ten years, celebrated the impact we've made together, and looked ahead to the opportunities and challenges that await us in the years to come.

Looking around, it was impossible not to appreciate how many people have played a role in this journey. Every home we've created and every life we've impacted has been made possible by a community that believes everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to everyone who has supported our mission over the last decade. We are especially grateful to our staff, board of directors, and Development Committee, whose hard work behind the scenes helped make the evening such a success.

As we look toward the next ten years, we invite you to consider making a gift to help keep this work moving forward. Together, we can continue creating homes, providing support, and building a stronger community for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

A special thank you to our board member, Christianne Radziewicz, for graciously hosting the celebration at Springhouse Farm. It was the perfect setting for the evening and a beautiful place to celebrate this milestone.

We would also like to thank the partners who helped make the evening possible:
• Photography: Ben Haith
• Videography: Capture Your Moments
• Wine & Beer Service: Catering by Michael's
• Onsite Services: United Rentals
• Music: Denn Bunger

One of the best parts of what we do is creating opportunities for tenants, volunteers, and staff to spend time together and build community.

This month, our group headed to Baltimore Woods Nature Center for a day of fresh air, conversation, and adventure. A few brave hikers even tackled a challenging 2.5-mile trek through the trails.

Afterward, everyone gathered for pizza, generously provided by our friends at McClurg Remodeling.

Days like these remind us that community is built in the little moments. Sharing a walk, trying something new, and spending time together outside of our daily routines.

Thank you to Baltimore Woods and McClurg for helping make the day so special.

We were honored to welcome New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli to A Tiny Home for Good this week.

We first had the opportunity to meet Comptroller DiNapoli last summer, and it meant a lot to hear that our work stayed with him. While he was in Syracuse, he reached out to learn more about the progress we've made, the exciting projects ahead, and the impact permanent supportive housing continues to have in our community.

During his visit, he toured several of our homes and had the chance to spend time with Jill, one of our tenants, who shared her story and what having a safe, stable home has meant for her journey.

We're grateful to Comptroller DiNapoli and his team for taking the time to visit, ask thoughtful questions, and see this work firsthand. Every conversation helps build greater understanding of what it takes to create lasting housing stability and stronger communities.

We recently had the chance to meet with their team and share more about our work, the impact happening every day, and what the future looks like for our organization. We are excited to have them alongside us as we continue building homes, supporting tenants, and creating long-term stability in our community.

Corporate partnerships like this truly make our work possible.

If your business is looking for a meaningful way to make an impact in our community, send us a message. We would love to talk more about partnering together.

Over the last couple of weeks, students from the Syracuse ArchitectureSchool at Syracuse University worked alongside our team to design and build a pergola next to our office and behind one of our homes.

What made this project especially powerful was seeing the students take something from an idea on paper to something real and lasting. For some of them, this was the first time they had ever used power tools or built something with their own hands. Watching them learn, problem solve, and bring this space to life was incredible.

For our organization, this space will mean so much. It will be a place to build community with tenants, hold meetings outside of the office, connect one-on-one, and spend time together through both the good moments and the hard ones. So much of our work happens through relationships, and this gives us a beautiful new space to continue that work.

A huge thank you to Professor Hannibal Newsom and all of the students who poured their time, creativity, and energy into this project. We are so grateful for this partnership and the care you showed our community.

We’ve been putting our hoodies to work lately… dirt, paint stains, and whatever else comes with building homes and showing up for our tenants every day.

The good news is the paint stains do not come included. You have to add those yourself.

We recently connected with Leigh McGonagle from Poplar Point Studio to share more about our work, and what came out of that conversation has been incredible.

After showing Leigh the work happening next to our office at the Lead Freedom House, she immediately started dreaming up ideas for the space. Thanks to her vision, creativity, and some amazing partners, this beautiful garden bed quickly came to life. Leigh spent two full days alongside us prepping, planting, and completely transforming the area with flowers, trees, and so much care.

This project is going to have such a meaningful impact on our organization, the children and families who will stay at the Lead Freedom House, and even this small stretch of South Avenue we call home. It makes the space feel safer, more welcoming, and full of life.

Leigh and the team at Poplar Point Studio truly live out their mission of creating joy through plants, and we are so grateful they chose to bring that joy to our community.

Thank you, Leigh. What you created here matters more than you know.
