June 7th is National Cancer Survivor Day! We're so grateful for our amazing volunteers! In 2025 the PAWS of CNY Hospital Program's 17 volunteer teams logged, collectively, over 250 hours at partnering hospitals and medical sites including cancer treatment centers. These PAWS teams have brightened the days of children, teens and adults, in addition to family members and staff, at hospital settings from Oswego to Syracuse and beyond!
Before qualifying to make hospital visits, each volunteer team logs at least 40 hours of other therapy visits, and those teams visiting Golisano Children's Hospital have 20 hours of those logged therapy visits at child-related activities such as after-school programs or library reading programs.

If your hospital or medical facility would like to include pet therapy, visit www.pawsofcny.org for more information or to submit a request!

The PAWS of CNY dogs have passed evaluations that ensure they respond politely to those who want to meet them, but not all dogs you may meet have. And everyone-even dogs-can have a day where they don't want to "people".

This helpful information and graphic comes from Paws First, LLC.

It's always a good idea when greeting a dog you have never met to first check with the person responsible for the pet. If they agree that it's okay, you should allow the dog/ handler to facilitate the interaction.

* You should stand still, facing sideways can help you appear less threatening.
* Do not make hard eye contact
* Give a little pat on your leg- This invites the dog into your space, rather than you invading theirs. Specifically for reactive or nervous dogs it can make all the difference in their progress.
* If the dog comes into your space to sniff you, you should wait several seconds before petting or talking excessively.
* If the dog stays after several seconds, you may pet them.
* It is not recommended to go right over their head or stick your hand in their face even if you have a treat, these gestures can be threatening.
* Try to pet slowly and calmly on the side, chest or shoulder.
* Stop petting the dog after a few seconds and see if they still remain in your space.
* If they decide to walk away at any point you should let them.
* They will come back if they want.

And don't be surprised if a PAWS of CNY Therapy Pet is ready for more love and attention. It's what they do-really well.

If you have a well-mannered, friendly dog who enjoys meeting people, consider becoming a PAWS of CNY Volunteer Team. For information visit www.pawsofcny.org

At the recent PAWS of CNY Annual Meeting the Board of Directors shared with our Volunteer Teams the breakdown of all the ways they meet the needs of Central New Yorkers. The many hours they volunteer and the many miles they drive to bring the healing impact of Pet Therapy to so many is incredible and so very much appreciated.
