The PAWS of CNY dogs have passed evaluations that ensure they respond politely to those who want to meet them, but not all dogs you may meet have. And everyone-even dogs-can have a day where they don't want to "people".
This helpful information and graphic comes from Paws First, LLC.
It's always a good idea when greeting a dog you have never met to first check with the person responsible for the pet. If they agree that it's okay, you should allow the dog/ handler to facilitate the interaction.
* You should stand still, facing sideways can help you appear less threatening.
* Do not make hard eye contact
* Give a little pat on your leg- This invites the dog into your space, rather than you invading theirs. Specifically for reactive or nervous dogs it can make all the difference in their progress.
* If the dog comes into your space to sniff you, you should wait several seconds before petting or talking excessively.
* If the dog stays after several seconds, you may pet them.
* It is not recommended to go right over their head or stick your hand in their face even if you have a treat, these gestures can be threatening.
* Try to pet slowly and calmly on the side, chest or shoulder.
* Stop petting the dog after a few seconds and see if they still remain in your space.
* If they decide to walk away at any point you should let them.
* They will come back if they want.
And don't be surprised if a PAWS of CNY Therapy Pet is ready for more love and attention. It's what they do-really well.
