Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign

Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign The Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign, a partnership between the Onondaga Nation and Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON), is developing a broad alliance

What is the Two Row Wampum? The Two Row Wampum belt is the Haudenosaunee record of the first agreement between the Haudenosaunee and European newcomers. 2013 will mark the 400th anniversary of this first covenant, which forms the basis for the covenant chain of all subsequent treaty relationships made by the Haudenosaunee and other Native Nations with settler governments on this continent. The agr

eement outlines a mutual, three-part commitment to friendship, peace between peoples, and living in parallel forever (as long as the grass is green, as long as the waters flow downhill and as long as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west). Throughout the years, the Haudenosaunee have sought to honor this mutual vision and have increasingly emphasized that ecological stewardship is a fundamental prerequisite for this continuing friendship.

“We didn’t know what would come… we are delighted that there are nany seeds that sprang up out of it.”

-Andy Mager

“There is something starting to move now. There are more people getting involved, more people telling this story, and there are more people willing to listen… it’s a historical story but it is a story about the future as well. It’s a story of how we on this world should live together.“

- Arttu Sesselaar, Assistant Coach, Dutch Box Lacrosse Team

Evan Pritchard (Center for Algonquin Culture) recalls the 2013 Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign at the 2023 Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community Strawberry Festival

On Saturday we had a reunion of many of the Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign’s organizers and paddlers. We took part in Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community’s Strawberry Festival, and are grateful for the opportunity to share some of our stories from that epic year, 10 years ago.

The rain on metal roofs made it difficult for the people in the pavilion to hear - good thing we recorded the speakers!

Video of speakers includes: Andy Mager from Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON) Beynan Ransom (Mohawk) reading a statement from Jake Edwards, Buffy Curtis and Liseli Haines of NOON.

Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign 10 Year Celebration
June 24-25 (11 am Saturday to early afternoon Sunday)
Kanatsiohareke Mohawk Community (near Fonda, NY) and Caroga Lake Campground

This summer is the 10th anniversary of the historic Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign. Hundreds of people came together with a spiritual commitment to renew the Covenant Chain of Friendship and educated many thousands of people about this foundational treaty and the desperate need to learn from its powerful vision and work together for a just and sustainable future for everyone.

To mark this anniversary we will gather at the annual Strawberry Festival at Kanatsiohareke on Saturday, June 24 from 11 am to 6 pm and then continue our celebrations that night and the following day at a campground about 20 minutes drive north of there. (Unfortunately, camping isn't available to us at Kanatsiohareke.)

Camping reservations are only $20/site for the night (+$5 for those from outside NYS) and there is a reasonably priced Super 8 hotel nearby (15 minutes drive from the campground) for those who want to come but for whom camping isn't a good option. People are responsible to arrange your own accommodations, so acting soon will mean you definitely have a place to stay!

We're collaborating with Kanatsiohareke so there will be a time when a few Two Row organizers and participants will speak briefly and Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation will have a table with information and items for sale, including a few remaining Two Row items.

We're hoping that many folks will join us. Take a few minutes to fill out this simple online form and let us know if you can join us: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1TLIoSZ48txyQ7M7IOFjAleF36q8T3bCdJf4kw1yIkeQ

More details to come.

In Peace,

Andy Mager, April Tarbell, Cindy Squillace, Jack Manno, Jake Edwards, Shirley Hill
