In Onondaga County, from 2010- June 2021, there were 56 infant deaths caused by unsafe sleep environments. The problem of unsafe sleep environment related-deaths is not only a problem for our county. According to a 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics Journal article, in the U.S., “Infant mortality rates attributable to ASSB (Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed) have quadrupled in the l
ast 2 decades.”
There are many local, county, state and federal initiatives to battle this issue. From 2005- June 2012, in Onondaga County and surrounding counties, men were present in 43% of infant unsafe sleep/ co-sleeping deaths. This statistic fueled the need for our page. What if we made an infant safe sleep information site just for men? It is our goal to inform men so that they are well equipped to help their babies sleep safely. Safe Sleep Syracuse, with the Onondaga County Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT) support, is providing you with this information. We do not want this to happen to your baby. Here are the guidelines to help your baby sleep safely.
• No other adults, children and/or pets sleeping with the baby
• Always place baby on his/her back to sleep
• In a crib with a firm mattress- one baby per crib
• No bumpers, pillows, blankets, positioners/wedges, burp rags,
stuffed
toys, or anything else that can accidentally cover their faces
and/or prevent them from breathing
• Safe Room Temperature: AAP recommends 65 -75 °F in winter and
68 - 82 °F in summer
• Dress baby in no more than one more layer than you are wearing
yourself
• Smoke Free Environment
Many people bring their babies to bed with them. There is no guaranteed safe situation in which an infant can sleep with an adult or another child. People are not always conscious of the position of their bodies during sleep. Our team has found that when babies die in co-sleeping situations, they often die when another's body accidentally prevents the baby from breathing. This is an unsafe sleep situation (it is called overlaying). Babies who are placed on their stomachs for sleep are at a greater risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). While we don't know exactly what causes SIDS, we do know that babies sleep safer on their backs. Many people think SIDS occurs frequently. It does not. Most of the time unsafe sleep situations are the biggest problem. We know the loss of a child is painful. A safe night is a good night. Thank you for being a fan of this page.
