Back in April, when many were still adjusting to quarantine, our previous president Meghan Nelligan was interviewed on mental health during social isolation. As society is beginning to slowly open up again and the school year is nearing, this information is still relevant. It is as important as ever to take care of your mental/physical health while quarantining or keeping a social distance. We hope everyone is being safe, wearing their masks, and washing their hands! 💙

In this time of isolation, feeling alone, depressed, anxious or just mentally struggling are normal and expected, according to experts.

We are thinking of all of our members and the Syracuse community during this time as well as beyond that. This epidemic is causing a lot of valid anxiety, confusion and sadness. Please-take care of yourselves and know that there are resources such as this that may help. For a lot of us at Syracuse Active Minds chapter, our worlds have been disrupted. It is okay to be upset over the loss of senior year, of moving back home suddenly, of financial struggles or concern for those with serious illnesses. It is okay to be scared and worried about the world. But take a moment to breathe. Practice social-distancing and do something that will make you feel most YOU. This is a strange time and we are sad to no longer be holding general body meetings however we need to all come together and take this epidemic seriously. We will get through this together! Our messenger is always open.

Tips and tools for addressing our mental health, and helping friends, co-workers and neighbors during COVID-19-related closures.

A message from Active Minds at Syracuse University:

We would like to express solidarity with all those who have been protesting against the recent bias incidents on our campus. These acts are unacceptable, disturbing and disheartening. Not only as fellow students at Syracuse, but as human beings, we want to share our support for .

It is admirable how our classmates, friends, and neighbors have shown such strength, leadership, and courage in the face of hatred. It is because of these individuals that call for administrative as well as societal change that will allow our campus to do better. Change begins with all of us: spreading support, raising our voices or simply listening. No one should feel unsafe or unwelcome anywhere-- but especially not in the place they call home.

If you would like to show support, the sit-in protest is located in the Barnes Center. If you cannot physically attend, there are still ways to help such as donating resources to the gofundme page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/black-student-led-sitin-at-syracuse-u?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&fbclid=IwAR0BPw3elptAua8ZWmVdTC3XFu0MjXbLx9u8Jegp_0PSPMdopr3_X9MisuQ

As an organization that aims to prioritize the well-being of students on our campus, we want you to know that: we are here for you, we care about you and we stand alongside you.

Starting tomorrow, it is Mental Health Awareness Week. There are so many great activities and events planned to raise awareness, open discussion and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.

Active Minds will be holding our general interest meeting soon. More details to come. But we are so grateful for organizations on campus and Student Association for putting together this week & emphasizing that we all must take time to focus on our mental health & check in with ourselves ❤️❤️
