Today, students from Tarleton State University participated in a meaningful experiential learning opportunity at Dallas–Fort Worth National Cemetery and the National Medal of Honor Museum. For many students, this marked their first visit to these nationally significant sites of remembrance, while others had the opportunity to honor family members interred at the cemetery. During their time at the cemetery, students participated in a guided tour and laid a white carnation in remembrance of veterans, engaging in a moment of reflection on service and sacrifice.

During their visit to the National Medal of Honor Museum, students were honored to be joined by Dr. Rachael Capua and her mother, Catherine Benavidez-Anderson, descendants of Roy P. Benavidez. The visit included a panel conversation moderated by Eliel Hinojosa Jr., Korean War Legacy Foundation Grant Coordinator, where they shared personal reflections on Roy Benavidez’s story and legacy. As one of the Medal of Honor recipients featured in the museum’s exhibits, his story provided a powerful and personal connection to the themes of courage, sacrifice, and service explored throughout the experience.

This opportunity reflects the Korean War Legacy Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting meaningful, place-based learning experiences that connect students to the lived histories behind our nation’s most significant acts of service and remembrance.

On January 25, 1951, Operation Thunderbolt began under General Matthew Ridgway’s command. This UN ground counteroffensive successfully pushed back enemy forces.

After Lieutenant General Walton H. Walker was killed in a traffic accident while on duty, Ridgway was called to Korea to lead the Eighth Army. Later, when President Truman removed General MacArthur, Ridgway became the Supreme Allied Commander of the Far East and eventually served as Army Chief of Staff. He was well respected by both his troops and other leaders.
