Friends of Firefighter Patrick O'Connell He was there for his community; now it's time for his community to be there for him... Both are very expensive; both are vital necessities!

In the spring of 2010, a seemingly strong, vibrant young man with a heart of gold received the horrific news from his doctor: I’m sorry, Patrick, you have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS; Lou Gehrig’s disease). It’s a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement; it’s a cruel, devastating diagnosis. Our friend now needs community support to help

fund the cost of his wheelchair and powered chair lift. Please join us on Sunday, August 26th at 2:00 PM, to celebrate Patrick’s courageous struggle with this debilitating disease. Our goal is to cheer him on as we raise funding for his wheelchair and chair lift. Where: Lakeside Fire Department Recreational Hall (Rain or Shine)

Patrick and Jean are still overwhelmed by the community's outpouring of support on Sunday. Hundreds of Thank You's are forthcoming but there are a few that can't wait. Patrick and Jean asked us to send a special acknowledgment to:

THE LAKESIDE FIRE DEPARTMENT. They simply outdid themselves in the days leading up to Sunday and then, again, during the event. Words fail to express their deep appreciation.

The HENDRY BAND AND MICHAEL CRISSAN: two outstanding performances!! The audience loved your music and we loved your incredible generosity. You made Patrick's day a very memorable event.

The BAG PIPERS: You lifted Patrick into another world with your 'surprise' performance. A moment he will cherish with a heart full of gratitude.

Tony MCINTRYRE and TIM WOLSEY: Words will NEVER capture all that the two of you did to bring this fundraiser to the level of success it achieved. You are both heroes professionally and personally.

When a truly amazing young man is struck down by an unforgiving disease (ALS) it's hard to say he is lucky; but, in Patrick's case, at this particular moment, he is blessed. Yesterday's incredible outpouring of love, generosity, and support is something only a select few will ever experience in their lifetime. Patrick Is One Of The Select Few; a richly deserved status. So as we all exchange our appreciation of each other's involvement in yesterday's event, take a moment to thank Patrick; for it was HIS courage and spirit that lifted all of us into action yesterday. THANK YOU PATRICK! (My prince).

Just by showing up to the event, you will be demonstrating loud and clear that a community knows how to take care of its own. So get your shorts and t-shirts on and make the quick drive to the Lakeside Fire Dept. Recreational Hall. You'll know you're at the right place when you see the red and white tents where our firemen will be battling in a heated GrillFest ThrowDown! See you there!

Let's hear it for our local TV celebrities, Patrick and Jean!!! Jean did an outstanding job explaining a little bit about the journey they face together. It was a beautiful segment. Their courage and beautiful smiles surely made a lasting impression on the audience. Lucky for us, we get to see them in person next Sunday! Be there!!
