The Theta Xi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., in keeping with our national commitment to President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, proudly introduces I Am My Brother’s Keeper. Through this program, the chapter will adopt a 10-point agenda to address issues impacting men of color in the Syracuse community, particularly in the following manners:
Entrepreneurial Development of African-American males
Sigma Beta Club Programming
Addressing the disparaging drop-out rates of our young men of color
Educate African American males on the essentials of mentoring
Joining us to kickoff the launch of our new chapter initiative is Syracuse University alumni Dr. Don C. Sawyer III. Sawyer. Dr. Sawyer is currently a tenure-track assistant professor in the department of sociology at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He teaches courses on Race, Education, Popular Culture, and Visual Sociology, including the university’s first sociology course dedicated to hip-hop culture. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology and M.S. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Syracuse University and a B.A. in Psychology from Hartwick College. His scholarly focus is on race, urban education, hip-hop culture, visual sociology, and youth critical media literacy. His current book project is an analysis of the social and academic experiences of African American male students in a dismantled urban middle school. He is also the creator of a hip-hop program (The Crossroads Collective) at an urban public high school in New Haven, Connecticut serving Black and Latino males at risk of dropping out.
The event will highlight Syracuse University and Syracuse community mentorship programs as well as recognize the achievements of our local philanthropic partner the Good Life Youth Foundation.
Please join us Wednesday March 23rd in Slocum Auditorium (SlOC 214) at 7:14pm to learn more about our new initiative and how you could get involved! For more information contact chapter secretary Travis Davis at [email protected].
