As a union that represents higher ed students, staff, and faculty (including at Fordham University), we are totally opposed to the bill in NYC restricting protests around educational facilities. We join Committee of Interns and Residents and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East in calling on Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani to uphold free speech and veto Intro 175-B.

A bill keeping demonstrators away from houses of worship is veto-proof, but critics want the mayor to reject a similar measure targeting educational facilities.

“A lot of teachers here are working two jobs to get by, and we want our teachers to be happy, healthy, well paid and have all their basic needs met,” Weinstock said. “We feel (selfish), as students, that things work better when the people who are instructing us and making the university function have all of their basic needs met.”
