William G. Pomeroy Foundation

William G. Pomeroy Foundation We help celebrate history & make a difference in the lives of those facing a blood cancer diagnosis.

The Pomeroy Foundation's mission began in 2005 when Founder and Trustee Bill Pomeroy was fighting Acute Myeloid Leukemia and his survival was in doubt. Fortunately, he was matched with a donor and received a lifesaving stem cell transplant. Bill felt that, should he survive, he would help others in a similar situation. The idea was the genesis for the Foundation’s first initiative: to diversify th

e bone marrow donor registry so that anyone, from any ethnic background, can find a match. Our other initiative is to help people to celebrate their community’s history. We fulfill this part of our mission by providing fully funded grants for roadside markers and plaques. Since 2006, we have funded over 2,000 signs across the U.S., all the way to Alaska. Markers help educate the public, encourage pride of place, and promote historic tourism, economically benefiting the communities in which they are placed. Grants cover the entire cost of a cast aluminum marker, pole and shipping.

Local history has the power to spark curiosity and inspire something bigger. 🎉

What began as one marker idea in Burlington, WA, has transformed into a community-wide heritage trail designed to educate, engage, and celebrate the people and places that make their city unique.

After receiving their first Pomeroy Marker, the Burlington Historical Society expanded their efforts with local partners to preserve and share local history by creating their own self-guided tour and building out programming centered around their community’s history. Now, on Saturday, June 20, the Burlington community will dedicate three more markers as part of the grand opening of their heritage trail. 👏

Coinciding with the trail launch, a new video series from Burlington shows how highlighting local history through markers encourages pride of place, promotes tourism, and strengthens the fabric of communities. We’re excited to share the first of several videos they created.

The people of Burlington have felt the connection, seen the impact of markers, and have been inspired to invest more time and effort into the recognition and celebration of what makes their community special.

Sometimes all it takes is one idea to start something bigger. Your community could be next with a Pomeroy Marker! Thanks to the hard work of students at Arlington Central School District, their extensive primary source research projects through the Pomeroy Education Program (PEP) have helped bring FIVE more markers throughout Poughkeepsie, NY! Guided by history teacher Robert McHugh, their commitment to preserving and highlighting local history has transformed their research into a tangible community impact across more than a dozen markers to date. 🎉
Congratulations to the students and everyone involved in shining light on this history. Recently dedicated markers include: photojournalist Lee Miller, author and suffrage leader S. Josephine Baker, trailblazing lawyer and civil rights advocate Gaius C. Bolin, and the community’s historic Gothic School and Old City Hall.
Their work is part of a growing number of student projects completed through our PEP, which connects students with the history of their communities. PEP provides personalized guidance as students work alongside their teachers to explore the importance of public history and civic literacy through the research of local historic sites with the opportunity to apply for a Pomeroy Marker. Along the way, students develop valuable skills in primary source research and historical writing.

We honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

From the Revolution and Civil War to World War I, World War II and beyond, Pomeroy Markers across the country preserve stories and legacies spanning generations of American history and the veterans who served.

As we pay tribute this Memorial Day, these markers are among the many in communities nationwide that illuminate service, sacrifice, and remembrance throughout our history.

A group of middle school students have been showcasing their historical research skills with the recent dedication of TWO🎉 Pomeroy Markers highlighting Revolutionary War history in Albion, NY.

One of the two markers is part of the Foundation’s New York historical marker program, recognizing an early cemetery and early residents of the area. The second marker is part of the Patriot Burials program, and honors General George Washington’s lifeguard and Continental Army soldier, Robinson Smith. ⭐

The markers were researched by students from Albion Central School District and their teacher, Tim Archer. They have received four grant-funded Pomeroy Markers through our Patriot Burials and New York history programs, all commemorating significant members of the early Albion community, including war veterans. Their work is part of a growing number of student research projects through our Pomeroy Education Program (PEP)!

Colorful pageantry marked the unveiling of a new Revolutionary America historical marker in Virginia by the Daughters of the American Revolution! 📍

Recognizing the Jefferson family’s dramatic 1781 flight from British troops at Monticello, the marker is part of our “Revolutionary America 1775–1783” partner program with the Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters.

Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters and the Albemarle Chapter, NSDAR celebrated the occasion with a memorable ceremony featuring a bagpiper, musket salute, and speeches about what transpired in 1781.

Shout out to Julien Icher of The Lafayette Trail for representing the Foundation at the event! The celebration also brought together members of the SAR and nearly 100 community members from Albemarle County and the surrounding area.

Thanks to James Smith for the great photos from the event! 📸

“There’s no place like home.” ✨

Long before "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" became a global phenomenon, its story began in Central New York with L. Frank Baum.

As part of the author’s 170th birthday celebration, a festive crowd gathered in Mattydale yesterday to unveil a new Pomeroy Marker recognizing Baum’s legacy and the tale that has captivated the world for more than a century. From the books and classic 1939 movie to modern adaptations, the magic of Oz first began as an idea taking shape in the imagination of a young boy at his home in the Town of Salina.

Congratulations to the Lyman Frank Baum Foundation, Incorporated of Syracuse, which received a grant through the Pomeroy Foundation’s New York historical marker program! We were delighted to join partner organizations, officials, Baum relatives, and local fans for a dedication filled with “Emerald City” spirit celebrating an author whose imagination helped shape American storytelling forever.

Representing the Pomeroy Foundation, Bill Brower shared reflections on how markers help communities connect more deeply to their shared history and sense of place. In keeping with the spirit of the day and message of “there’s no place like home,” he highlighted Founder and Trustee Bill Pomeroy’s excitement for this marker and the Foundation’s belief that local history belongs to everyone.

A special thank you to Kathleen Judith Sorbello DiScenna, executive director of the Lyman Frank Baum Foundation, along with all of the partners and community members who helped bring this remarkable project to life and share Baum's story. This Pomeroy Marker helps ensure the magical connection between local history and the Land of Oz is preserved for future generations.

Pomeroy Marker spotlight at Clarkson University! 🎉

The Holcroft House, one of the oldest and most significant buildings on Clarkson’s campus, is now home to a Pomeroy Marker! 📍 Congratulations to history professor Dr. Stephen Casper and his students on their success in researching and obtaining the grant for their new marker!

Built ca. 1822, the house was passed down through generations of the Clarkson family. It was donated to the University in 1928, along with 600 acres of surrounding land by Annie Clarkson before her passing in 1929.
