Syracuse Parks Conservancy

Syracuse Parks Conservancy Our goal is to help make Syracuse a greener, healthier & better place to live! A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was drafted.

Our Mission

The mission of the Syracuse Parks Conservancy is to ensure that all Syracuse parks, public lands and the habitats therein are sustainably protected, restored, enhanced and developed for the educational, recreational and wellness uses of our citizens and their guests; we will accomplish this by directing and managing these lands and facilities in a public-private partnership with the C

ity of Syracuse. Our History

The idea for the Syracuse Parks Conservancy (SPC) began in 2008 when members from various T-N-T groups and Park Associations throughout the city began discussing the need for a citizen based organization to coordinate activities in the parks, raise funds for needed projects/repairs/improvements, recruit volunteers for events and act as a liaison with city government. Throughout 2008-09, concerned citizens continued to meet both formally and informally to develop a “blueprint’ for the organization. A committee was formed to draft a Constitution and begin formal dialogues with the City of Syracuse. Representatives and lawyers from the City and the SPC meet to finalize details. Members from the SPC and Pat Driscoll, Commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Youth testified before the Common Council as to the need for this organization and how it would work with and support City government. Meet our board member Nicole Samolis!

Favorite park activity: My new favorite park activity will be discovering all the parks in Syracuse that I haven’t been to.
Why parks are important to you:
Green spaces are such a key component to quality of life for people living in urban areas and we are fortunate to have so many in the City of Syracuse. As an urban dweller who spends down time in the outdoors hiking, biking, canoeing and skiing, Syracuse’s parks offer green spaces to enjoy. Whether it’s to read a book or have a picnic or simply go for a walk I enjoy the various parks and stumbling upon a statue and discovering more of Syracuse’s history.
Something interesting about yourself.
Something interesting about me… I always wanted to learn to row and 4 years ago learned to row with the Syracuse Chargers and have found my inner athlete and am passionate about the sport and enjoy the competitive nature of the sport.

The snow is here and we’re feeling that urge to slow down and retreat...at least I am. I’ve been trying to spend more time at home or go out for walks on nature trails instead of packing the schedule with places to go and things to do, which can be tough at times. We’ve been cooking lots of comforting meals, using the fireplace for the first time this season, and lots of hot cocoa.

It isn’t officially winter yet but we sure had a beautiful fall this year. Sometimes the transition from summer to winter is a quick one but this year the fall season seemed to last a while.

Here at the SPC we’ve been hard at work with the next edition of The Botanical Observer, new projects happening in the parks, and working with the parks department on the new Pass Arboretum project. There are a lot of wonderful things on the horizon and we can’t wait to share with you.

Best,
Heather McClelland
Executive Director of the SPC
