Israel’s war on Gaza squandered infinite human potential (JVP Syracuse Op-Ed, syracuse.com, 10-14-26)

In response to “Three years after Oct. 7, Jews worldwide are in the crosshairs of antisemitism” by Richard D. Wilkins (Sept. 30, 2026):

Jewish liturgy teaches that every life contains infinite potential, and that to take a life is to extinguish that infinite potential. This week marks three years of what the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars all recognize as Israel’s genocide of Palestinian people in Gaza.

In his recent letter, Wilkins writes, “Innocent civilians were overwhelmingly the victims [...]. It was pure genocide, planned, practiced and perpetrated.” It is an astounding feat of mental gymnastics that Wilkins is here describing the actions of Hamas and not the killing of more than 75,000 Palestinians by the State of Israel since Oct. 7, 2023 — and the thousands more estimated to lie buried beneath the rubble, much of which was once part of “safe zones” in the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, members of JVP Syracuse, Syracuse DSA Syracuse DSA 🌹 and the Central New York Working Families Party CNY Working Famlies met with the office of John Mannion Congressman John W. Mannion asking if he will sign onto the Block the Bombs Act, H.R.3565. If enacted, it would stop the Trump administration from providing the deadliest mu*****ns Israel has been documented using on civilians at least in Gaza and southern Lebanon.

You can go to blockthebombs.org to send a letter asking your Congressperson to sign onto this bill.

We delivered 3 very clear asks when we met with his office:
1) Will Representative Mannion commit to block any version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that includes the Deadly Merger (Section 219) with Israel, and refuse to approve the astronomical $1.15 trillion budget for war and mass murder?
2) Will Rep. Mannion sign onto the Block the Bombs Act?
3) Will Rep. Mannion have a direct meeting with us about Block the Bombs?

We were told Rep. Mannion is thinking carefully about this issue and that he takes his time to make any decision. We responded that this is genocide, it is an extremely urgent issue, and that he is complicit by not taking a position or any positive action. We have been contacting him in public forums for over a year, including two weeks ago when we mobilized over 25 people to submit a question about Block the Bombs to his tele town hall. A JVP Syracuse member also asked him about Block the Bombs during the live event (see related post), but his answer was indirect and insufficient.

Representative John Mannion, we demand you sign onto Block the Bombs and meet with your constituents directly. It is unacceptable we have to work so hard to have a meeting with you.

JVP Syracuse member confronts Congressman Mannion about Israel and the Block the Bombs Act at September 3 Telephone Town Hall:

Despite speaking for ~3.5 minutes, the Congressman never directly answered our explicit question about whether he will support the Block the Bombs Act, H.R. 3565. Instead, he talked in circles and gave the usual platitudes about “peace in the Middle East”.

His staffers have also been dodging our requests for an in-person meeting with the Congressman about this legislation. We’ve helped deliver >100 constituent letters to Mannion about H.R. 3565 with no response.
