If you stayed with us during the first half of the year, you may have met one of our guests, Harvey. Harvey is a professor of Philosophy and Religion at Colgate University who traveled to Syracuse to be by his wife Gertrude’s side after she suffered a massive stroke following a kidney transplant. Her condition was sudden and unexpected, and Harvey’s stay with us extended from March well into August.

We recently learned that Gertrude passed away. We ask that you keep Harvey and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time.

We received this message from Gertrude’s sister, Mable, who traveled from Oklahoma to be by her sister’s side and stayed with us at Sarah’s Guest House as well.

“We feel blessed to have found a home away from home at Sarah’s Guest House. When we reflect on the unusual kindness we received at Sarah’s Guest House in the world of selfishness and cruelty we live in, I am filled with a lot of hope to know that kindness, selflessness and genuine benevolence from the heart still exists. For this, we say may God bless Sarah’s Guest House for many generations to come, for this kind of place is needed in this cruel world indeed.”

At Long Last… Our New Fence!!

Something seemingly as simple as a fence can make a world of difference. For the last few years at Sarah’s Guest House, we dealt with looking at a dilapidated wooden fence that had seen better days and we genuinely needed a new composite fence to replace our aging and broken backyard enclosure. What began as a practical need for protection, privacy, and safety of our house guests, volunteers and staff recently became a beautiful example of what can happen when generous people and organizations come together around a shared purpose.

“Engineers Unite for Safety & Healing” became our summertime appeal to local engineering firms who had previously volunteered and supported our mission to ask for their funding support for this endeavor. With our fingers crossed, we hoped to get funding for family owned and operated LEADER FENCE to do an installation by this Fall before wintertime set in.

The very first firm to step forward was C&S Companies whose generosity truly spearheaded this important project. TTM Technologies, Inc. then stepped up to match C&S’s’ donation, providing two lead gifts that helped propel the project forward. While still short and hoping to reach our goal, an anonymous donor and new friend to the house graciously donated to the project, along with a donation from Mr. Joe’s Renovations, a business in Binghamton NY whose family members had stayed at the house previously. Rounding up the final funding was K&A Engineering Consultants who joined the effort. Through a collaborative effort, funding was secured in September to get our new fence installed! Together, these gifts helped us reach the finish line and make the new fence a reality.

The fence is more than just “a fence.” It provides privacy, protection, and safety for the many patients and their families who stay at Sarah’s Guest House while receiving medical care in our community. It creates a more comfortable and secure environment and enhances the beauty of our backyard - a peaceful outdoor space where guests can gather, reflect, enjoy some fresh air and nature, or simply find a quiet moment to relax and unwind during a challenging time.

We are deeply grateful to these supporters who believed in this project and helped provide an essential need to the house, our visitors and guests.

The collective power of giving made this happen and we are so thankful!

As we enter the weekend, the house is full, all 22 bedrooms taken by out of town patients and families traveling to Syracuse for urgent medical care. We are thankful for CBA Syracuse visiting to prepare them a delicious meal. CBA has been visiting us for years and always come with genuine interest and caring hearts.

What a day!

The sun was shining, the clubs were swinging, and the spirit of generosity was everywhere at our 2026 Golf for Our Guests Tournament, presented for the ninth consecutive year by our incredible friends at CNY Family Care!

From our sponsors and golfers to our volunteers, donors, friends, and everyone who helped make the day so special - THANK YOU! Your enthusiasm, generosity, and support help Sarah’s Guest House continue providing a welcoming home away from home for families traveling from afar for medical care.

David Haas’ 40th birthday is just days away, Saturday, September 19, and we’re celebrating someone who has dedicated so much of his life to making Sarah’s Guest House a place of comfort, care, and hope for families traveling from afar for medical care.

In David’s honor, we’re encouraging our friends and supporters to make a $40 donation to Sarah’s Guest House, a purpose and place near and dear to his heart.

And there’s a little something extra for those who participate!

DONATE $40 & BE ENTERED TO WIN A VIP DINNER FOR EIGHT!

Every $40 donation made in David’s honor will enter you into our special birthday raffle. Three winners and their plus-ones will be invited to a special VIP dinner for eight at the home of Renee McCaffrey.

Joining the winners will be David and his wife, Maria, for an evening of delicious food, w**e, and wonderful company.

The menu will be prepared by Ken Clark, one of Sarah’s Guest House’s fabulous meal makers and a talented chef in his own right. It promises to be a truly memorable evening celebrating friendship, community, and the mission David cares so deeply about.
