Today for Pride Month, the STA is highlighting Sally Ride. Sally Ride was the first American Woman in space and the first astronaut known to have been LGBTQ+. In November 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which Ride's partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, accepted on her behalf.

Today for Pride Month, the STA is highlighting Bayard Rustin. Bayard Rustin was a Civil Rights Activist, and an openly gay man in the 1960's. He was instrumental in the organization for the 1963 March On Washington. He was a staunch Labor Rights activist and Unionist, working with AFL-CIO during his life. In November 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which Rustin's partner, Walter Naegle, accepted on his behalf.

This past weekend at the NYSUT Board meeting, leaders from across New York — from Pre-K through higher education — engaged in important conversations about the role technology plays in our classrooms.

Together, we took action to ensure educators have a seat at the table when decisions are made about how and when technology is used in teaching and learning. Teachers are the experts. We see firsthand what our students need and the impact excessive screen time can have on learning, engagement, and human connection.

It’s time to let teachers teach. Our students deserve teacher-led instruction, meaningful interaction, and classrooms built on communication, critical thinking, and relationships. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Bill Scott Memorial 5K Run! Your support and community spirit helped make the event a great success.

With over 130 participants, the funds raised will support scholarships for students pursuing careers in social work, continuing Bill's legacy of helping and advocating for others.
