Black History Month Spotlight: Hawa Peters
Hawa Peters’ story is one of resilience, faith, and finding light even in the darkest moments. Born in Sierra Leone, she survived civil war and displacement before coming to the United States as a refugee. She later built her life in Utica, New York.
Her journey could have been defined by hardship. Instead, Hawa chose to let it shape her strength. She believes that no matter the circumstance, you can make the most of it. You can grow through it.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse and the Founder and Executive Director of Utica Royalties, Hawa pours that belief into young people every single day. She creates safe spaces centered on education, creativity, wellness, and connection. After seeing the emotional impact COVID-19 had on youth, she felt called to expand her work so young people could heal, feel supported, and discover their potential.
Hawa is incredibly sweet and brings warmth and care to everything she does. Whether she is serving on community boards, helping organize the African Festival, or mentoring youth, she leads with heart. Her presence alone makes people feel seen and valued.
“No matter the struggle, I make lemonade. My journey is proof that resilience can turn pain into purpose, and purpose into hope, healing, and opportunity for the next generation.”
Hawa’s life is proof that your beginning does not determine your ending. With resilience, positivity, and purpose, she continues to transform challenges into opportunities and hope for the next generation.
