“My name is Alyson Edwards and I am senior dual major in the iSchool and Whitman. I am from Wyckoff New Jersey and have two younger sisters. When I was in high school I was the only girl in my computer classes and it wasn’t until I visited Syracuse University that I realized how much the technology field could offer me. The iSchool was small enough to make a community for me at such a big school. I have had the experience to travel with other students in the iSchool on many occasions. I took the Technology Road Trip to New York City and got to see first hand the types of careers I could enter after graduation. After that road trip I knew I wanted to get more involved with travel through the iSchool and I went on EuroTech where I visited 6 countries in 18 days with my best friends I met through the iSchool. On top of visiting all the tourist sites we got to see companies such as BMW, EY, Heineken, Nestle and many more. I am so thankful for the iSchool and the opportunities that have opened up to me since coming to Syracuse University. Following graduation I will be working as a Technology Consultant for Financial Services at EY in the Hoboken office.”

Leah Orzechowski is a senior in the iSchool studying IM&T with a concentration in data analytics!

Why the iSchool?

“When I was a freshman, a former peer advisor explained the iSchool as being the apex of business and technology. And that is really the way I see it too- being the intersection of business, data, and technology to better understand the digital world. As someone who has always been an analytical thinker, I was really interested in the iSchool because it teaches the power of information and how we can use it to make data driven decisions in society.”

How has the iSchool impacted you?

“The iSchool has been extremely impactful in allowing me to pursue my passions through research and career opportunities. Since sophomore year I have been working as an undergraduate research assistant with Professor Stromer-Galley on the Twitter Conversational Health project. This research inspired a topic for my Honors Thesis where I am completing an independent study on presidential candidate Facebook advertisements in the 2020 election. The iSchool also being extremely career oriented has exposed me to the world of consulting where I completed an internship last summer at Crowe as a Financial Services IT Internal Audit Consulting Intern and recently accepted a job at Deloitte as an Application and Program Analyst after graduation.”

Cindy Membreno is an Information Management & Technology major concentrating in project marketing, originally from Long Island, New York.
“I chose to major in the iSchool after taking IST 195 because I was attracted to the combination of technical and conceptual courses that the major consisted of. This past summer I was able to intern at Nasdaq and really understood how the content we learn in the iSchool translates into the workplace. In every workplace, having technical, communication and management skills are crucial which is what makes the iSchool such an important and valuable school. We are truly taught how to work individually and in teams to the best of our abilities while maintaining respect for others domestically and globally. As I finish up my senior year i can genuinely say there is value to every course in the iSchool and will put that knowledge into practice as I graduate and pursue a career in technology.”

Ross Geffner is a junior Information Management & Technology Major from Millburn, New Jersey. Ross is a member and co-founder of Pencils of Promises, a non-profit organization that works to build schools and increase educational opportunities in developing countries. Ross chose the iSchool because he has always had a passion for technology. He wanted to find a career that interested him and gave him strong job security. After touring the iSchool he fell in love and applied early decision. Between the helpful peer advisors, hard-working students, and amazing atmosphere it was an easy decision. “My most memorable I school moment was creating my final project in Professor Corsello’s class. We had to create a mock Request for Proposal. I was the team president, so I really enjoyed leading a group of people while also gaining experience on how to make a real document. As a project management concertation this class was key for helping me decide my concentration. Once I finished this assignment, I had a better idea of what I wanted to do, and Professor Corsello does an amazing job of keeping you engaged and on your toes!”. Ross recommends IST 352- Professor Corsello and IST 400 with Professor Shramm. “The iSchool has taught me to workhard, meet deadlines, and just be myself. If you give your 100% every professor will be there for you along the way. I have learned that when you ask questions you will get answers. Do not hesitate to reach out for help. The iSchool has taught me time management, organization, and technical skills to get an Internship at Real Chemistry this summer”.

💡🧑🏻‍💻🌟
Michael Fudge- Professor of Practice
This is my 6th year as a PoP and my 20th at the iSchool. I’ve taught in some capacity or another since I arrived. Back when the world was still figuring out social media, I encouraged students to ask questions and comment on lecture over twitter while in class. Needless to say, it was awkward having everything you do tweeted about. “Prof. Fudge just said….” The entire class was either posting or reading posts. All the buzzing in class was hilarious. I’ve always enjoyed teaching. I was inspired by both the good and bad professors I had as an Undergrad. I originally started working at SU to get my master’s degree and never left! Something along the lines of “I think I am still too drunk to take this exam.” Student slurring those words in front of me. I admired the fact that they made it to class in person to tell me this. In their defense it was an 8am class on a Friday! Most recently, I’ve been going downhill skiing with my kids, making YouTube videos, fooling around with Raspberry PI’s and playing with my dog, Luna. Pre-COVID I did some baseball umpiring and got outdoors a lot more. I always enjoyed working in IT. My first job was in a computer store. From that point on my perspective of IT was based on helping people improve their work or lives. I think what I’ve learned over the years, and why I fit in so well in the iSchool, is that IT is useless without people to are willing to adopt it. My message to iSchool students is make the most of your time as a student! Colleges and Universities are truly unique places. You have a vast array of opportunities as your disposal: academic, professional, personal and social. Take it in an enjoy it because it goes fast and so few of us will have this type of opportunity again! Utilize faculty. Engage us! My colleagues at the iSchool want to work with you and get you involved with our projects.
