Congratulations to Syracuse Youth Wind Symphony musicians Isabella T (Flute - Baldwinsville), and Clark D (Tuba - Westhill), for being selected to and performing with the New York State Band Directors Association High School Honor Band that took place at the NYSBDA Winter Symposium this past weekend!

Bella and Clark represented SYWS and their home districts in the NYSBDA State Honor Band March 6, 7, and 8 - selection to this ensemble is considered one of the very top honors for instrumental musicians in New York State.

This year’s NYSBDA High School Honor Band was conducted by Dr. Jennifer Jolley: composer, conductor, and professor. The ensemble performed works by Dr. Jolley, Viet Cuong, and Randall Standridge. The concert finale included the *world premier* of Randall Standridge’s brand new piece, “Second Wind.” Both NYSBDA and the Westhill Bands are part of a consortium of schools and organizations across New York State who contracted with Mr. Standridge to compose this brand new work for Wind Band - Bella and Clark are some of the first musicians to ever play this piece that will now be performed worldwide. Mr. Standridge was present for Saturday’s rehearsals, presented the conference keynote speech, and was a great inspiration to the musicians and all of the Band Directors present.

Congratulations, again; we are so proud of you, Clark and Bella!! 🎶🎉🎶

Ian D - Baldwinsville - Percussion/Snare Drum
Justin L - Fayetteville-Manlius - Euphonium

At the start of December, the Syracuse Youth Wind Symphony traveled west to Rochester and performed at the NYSSMA All-State Winter Conference!

The SYWS presented a performance-clinic on Saturday afternoon titled “Building an Ensemble Culture of Joy!” to a fantastic crowd in the Grand Lilac Ballroom at the Rochester Convention Center. The session featured commentary from many SYWS Students and from Manager Sofia Benderski and Directors, Mr. Greg Borsz and Ms. Erin Althen. The Wind Symphony interwove performances of Flight of the Piasa/Robert Sheldon, Khan/Julie Giroux, Country Club Stomp/JaRod Hall, Lucid Dreams/Adrian B. Sims, and In Living Color/Katahj Copley throughout the clinic presentation. The musicians played beautifully and had the chance to connect with ensemble directors from across New York State about what makes the culture of the Syracuse Youth Wind Symphony so musical, supportive, compassionate, enjoyable, family-like, community-centered, and JOY-filled!
If you would like to check out the slide-portion of our presentation, you can view it here: www.tinyurl.com/sywsnyssma

Earlier Saturday morning, nineteen of our SYWS musicians were invited to serve as a lab chamber ensemble for Mr. Michael Levine and the Dallas Brass as they presented a session on Small Ensembles and how a focus on chamber music in the large ensemble program empowers musicians to lead, grow, and serve their community. Our SYWS musicians played so well in this session as soloists, in duets, trios, like-instrument groups, and as the full Lab Band.

Six of our musicians spent the Winter Conference weekend performing as a part of the Conference All-State Band, Orchestra, and Choir, and Mia, Emily, Justin, Ian, Catherine, and Sarai will get their own congratulations post next week 🎉

It is powerful to reflect on how far the SYWS has come in only a little more than two years - thanks to all of our student-musicians, alumni, families, band directors, private teachers, schools, managers, directors, and friends who have supported us along this path.

Congratulations to the whole SYWS program for representing CNY at the State Level in such an impressive and inspiring way!

SYWS Section Selfies Series 2025 - Part 11!

The Section Selfies project has encouraged our student-musicians to connect, create, and deepen their identity as a member of their section. Each section has crafted a selfie and come up with info to share to let you get to know them a bit better. Today, you will meet our SYWS Management Team, the incomparable Sofia Benderski and Kate O’Leary!

Sofia is a Westhill alumna (‘22), oboist, freelance musician, and performer who works at the Redhouse Arts Center as an actor on their educational tour. She recently started her own not-for-profit 501(c)(3) called the Passion Project Performers for young theatrical performers in the Syracuse area.

Kate is a Marcellus alumna (‘22), flutist, and current junior Music Education student at Syracuse University. She is involved with SU athletic bands, concert bands, choirs, and orchestra, and has had the honor of serving as president of both her chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota (a professional music fraternity) and NAfME Collegiate (the National Association for Music Education professional chapter at SU) this past year.

Kate and Sofia have known Ms. Althen for a combined 17 years! They feel so lucky to get to greet everyone each week at rehearsal and quite enjoy having dance parties to the different repertoire that SYWS plays throughout the year. Our management team was so proud of the successful NYSBDA performance and honored to be a part of that special moment. Sofia and Kate are looking forward to next season already and cannot wait to make more memories with the phenomenal students of the SYWS.

A piece of advice our management team would like to give is to stay positive, laugh, keep making music, and always find a reason to smile.

Note from Ms. Althen: We talk about a culture of joy all the time in the SYWS and we are so lucky that Kate and Sofia are on our team: they welcome our musicians to rehearsal each week, organize, serve, create, problem solve, connect, and innovate. They are such an integral part of our program and the JOY that is woven throughout every aspect of the SYWS experience!!! Also… there are some formal photos, but there are also some informal photos… it does seem that every time Ms. Althen abandons her phone on the stage, on the sign-in table, on a podium, a few bonus pictures of Sofia and Kate show up in her photo albums!

SYWS Section Selfies Series 2025 - Part 10!

The Section Selfies project has encouraged our student-musicians to connect, create, and deepen their identity as a member of their section. Each section has crafted a selfie and come up with info to share to let you get to know them a bit better. Today, you will meet our Syracuse Youth Wind Symphony Alto and Tenor Saxophones!

The SYWS Alto Saxophone section consists of Madeline V from Fulton, Dounia B who studies at home, and Benjamin K from West Genesee. As for our tenor saxes, we have Nolan C from Cazenovia, and Sophia Dixon from Oneida. Each week, our saxophonists look forward to socializing with other musicians in the ensemble. They would like to share that saxophone is *easily* the best instrument and that the funk and jazz sections of See Rock City have been their favorite parts of their favorite piece this year. They believe that Band is awesome because you get to communicate in a universal language, and that SYWS is awesome because you get to just play music and not worry about anything else. They also want to remind you that it’s never a mistake… it’s just jazz! They cannot wait to perform again this weekend and hope you join us Tonight at Westhill - Sunday, April 6 - at 7:30pm for our concert!

SYWS Section Selfies Series 2025 - Part 9!

The Section Selfies project has encouraged our student-musicians to connect, create, and deepen their identity as a member of their section. Each section has crafted a selfie and come up with info to share to let you get to know them a bit better. Today, you will meet our Syracuse Youth Wind Symphony Tubas!

Our Teriffic Tuba section features Evan P, Jack C, and Jack D from West Genesee, and Rey Q from Baldwinsville. Ask our tubas any question about Mr. Borsz, and they will likely know (or create) the answer…. In fact he was the answer to every single question we asked in the SYWS Tuba Section Selfie Questionaire - all answers lead to Mr. Borsz! Their favorite piece from SYWS this year is See Rock City by Brant Karrick because of the cool low brass features and the opening tuba soli. A fun fact about the tubas is that among them, they have section members who played in Conference All-State, Area All-State, All-County, march in Marching Bands, Parade Bands, and Indoor Drumline, and one of their musicians is even a certified Ninja Warrior! Our Tubas absolutely set the tone (and tuning and gorgeous sound) of the ensemble, and hope you can come out on Sunday to hear them in our season finale!
