The standoff lasted about six hours at the Syracuse apartment complex. He had originally been charged with trying to kill three officers.

The PBA is excited that K9 “Bomber” has joined the Force, as he recently completed the proper training with his K9 handler, Ofc. J. Nye.

K9 Bomber was named after former SPD detective William “Bomber” Lashomb, who tragically passed away in 2020 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. As you can see, Bomber’s legacy lives on.

PBA Sergeant at Arms D. Pelz was excited to welcome S. McKiernan (left) to the Executive Board, as she was recently appointed as the new recording secretary. S. McKiernan is a sergeant on 3rd platoon, and she is also a member of the Peer Support team. Welcome aboard, S. McKiernan!

PBA President Moran recently presented Det. L. McCormack (left) her PBA retirement gifts, as she proudly completed 20 years of service! Det. McCormack’s last assignment was in the Crime Scene Unit, where she was responsible for being called in all hours of the night to process the most sensitive cases. Det. McCormack was also a member of the Peer Support Team…always looking out for her fellow colleagues.

The PBA is grateful for the 6 recruits that graduated from the Academy in May, 2026. From hire date to permanent assignment in Patrol, the process takes at least 9 months for a recruit to complete.

The Department had 8 retirements in the month of May…ALONE! That’s not taking into account all of the retirements from JAN-APR, 2026, and the 30+ retirements in 2025.

The PBA appreciates Mayor Owens and her team for agreeing to waive the residency clause in the contract for 2 years, meaning officers don’t have to live in the city. That will help with recruitment.

Now, it’s time for the NYS Legislature to step up and pursue the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP) for SPD to retain as many retirement eligible members as possible. Changes are coming…it’s time to act now.

Congratulations to Det. D. Babbage (left) on his recent retirement from SPD, as he was recently issued his retirement baton, badge and challenge coin from PBA President Moran. Det. Babbage proudly served for over 30 years on the job, and he was a staple in the Special Investigations Division for a significant portion of his career, along with being a member on the SWAT team. Congratulations, and enjoy retirement, Det. Babbage!

PBA VP D. Patti (left) and PBA President J. Moran (right) were proud to issue Sgt. B. Potts “Pottsy” (center) his retirement gifts at his send-off this past week at Patrol East. Sgt. B. Potts completed 20 years of excellent service at SPD, while wrapping up his career as a supervisor in the Special Investigations Division. Sgt. Potts also spent nearly a decade as the PBA Treasurer and will always be remembered as a true cop’s, cop. Congratulations, and enjoy retirement, Pottsy!

PBA President Moran said: “I wish we had 50 more John Tassinis”…”Because if we did, it would help limit and reduce the mandated overtime that is being forced upon our members because of our staffing.”
