Meet the people who serve on our Volunteer Board here at ! ✨
Joe Piraino - Advocacy Director
How has AIA shaped your career?
• AIA has played an important role in my career by opening doors and creating opportunities. As a member of AIA CNY for 34 years, I have built relationships with many architects I likely would not have met otherwise. Those connections have led to projects, career growth, and new opportunities. Through my work on the Government Advocacy Committee, I have also met many legislators and staff members who have helped shape my professional journey. Thank you, AIA!
What excites you most about serving on the AIA board this year?
• Working on the Government Advocacy Committee excites me. Meeting with our legislators and trying to move the AIA political agenda forward is challenging and rewarding.
How long have you been practicing architecture and what is your favorite type of work?
• I have worked in Central New York in this field since 1987 and have been licensed since 1992. My favorite part of the work is translating a program into a schematic design that meets our clients’ needs. Whether the project is residential, commercial, or institutional, the reward is always the same.
Have you served on a board before?
• I have served on the Board many times, including as President in 2005 and as the Central New York representative on the NYS Board for two years.
Favorite building, Architect, city for architecture or Architectural Style?
• My favorite architectural style is Mid-Century Modern for its clean lines, openness, and connection to nature. I have always admired Frank Lloyd Wright, though many other outstanding architects also shaped this era.
