Animals utilize every bit of a dead standing tree that they can. Also called "snags", these important resources provide shelter, nesting spots, and food. From mammals like bats, squirrels, and raccoons to insects like butterflies, spiders, and bees, and amphibians like salamanders, toads, and treefrogs, if you see a dead standing tree, it has probably been home to at least one of them. Snags also provide important forage food options for birds and mammals who peck, poke, pound, and scratch their way to nutritious insects inside. We even found the mammal Henry Dul, Land Steward (Terra dispensator) making great use of this snag for a photo op while boundary marking at Hartfarms. Trees are truly magnificent!
